New rec centers ready for community use - WMBFNews.com, Myrtle ...

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) ? Horry County Park and Recreation recently opened doors two brand new recreation centers in Carolina Forest and in the Burgess Community.

Each new 21,000 square foot center was designed to meet industry standards to be green, energy efficient buildings and are in the process of becoming LEED certified.

Both recreation centers will offer after school programs among other indoor and outdoor activities for people of all ages. Each location comes with a gym, indoor walking track, rock climbing wall, exercise room, kitchens, locker rooms and multipurpose meeting rooms.

According to the South Strand Recreation Center manager, Chris Murphy, the cost for the projects is a combined $9 million. Each facility was about $4 million and the South Strand facility cost an addition $1.2 million for the outdoor fields and playgrounds.

Horry County resident Joan Thiel says money going to these centers is money well spent. Thiel lives minutes away from the new South Strand Recreation Center and feel it's just Burgess Community needed.

"I think this is wonderful. We need this in this area. Before this, we had nothing," Thiel explains.

According to Horry County Park and Recreation director Brent Taylor, they'll each cost around $200,000 a year to operate, including staffing. The county voted to move forward with construction on each project years ago.

After a little more than 20 months of construction, each facility is now up and running and ready for communities to use everything they each ?one has to offer.

"This is recreation. We run a lot of programs here, from seniors to kids, from ages four years old all the way up to the seniors. We have special events here, dances. We have open gym time here. It's a place for kids to come off the streets and come here to play," says Murphy.

Thursday night, Horry County is having a Grand Opening and dedication ceremony at the South Strand Recreation Center. For more information on each of these centers and the programs being offered, visit the Horry County's Parks and Recreation website.
