Alleged US trafficker on hunger strike in Mexico (AP)

MEXICO CITY ? Mexican authorities say a U.S. citizen being held as an alleged drug gang assassin is on a hunger strike because he was denied a conjugal visit with his wife.

The federal Public Safety Department says Edgar Valdez Villareal stopped eating Oct. 2 after officials denied his wife entry to the Altiplano maximum security prison near Mexico City.

A Thursday statement from the department says the visit was denied because Valdez's wife gave authorities three marriage certificates, each indicating she was born in a different place.

Valdez Villareal is also known as "La Barbie" and is alleged to have been a killer for the Beltran Leyva cartel. The Laredo, Texas, native was captured last year outside Mexico City after a yearlong pursuit.
