Extreme Sports September 11-17, 2011 - Quiksilver

Happenings in extreme sports included the Canada Damn Am, Dew Tour, NORA Cup, and ASP surfing on the US East Coast. Here's a taste of some of the action.

There's been so much going on in action sports all season and it's difficult for the internet to encapsulate it all, and virtually impossible for one little chronicler such as myself. Thusly, the evolution of the weekly compilation, although this does not signal total abandonment of single-event coverage! Following and writing about action sports keeps one sane, despite careening into middle age kicking and screaming. So enjoy the ride. Here's a smattering of what went down last week.

Tenth Anniversary of 9/11

Last week was historic as it marked the tenth anniversary of 9/11; here's a perspective by ESPN's Brian Tunney about NYC BMX rider Edwin De La Rosa's experience on that fateful day. The loss of life is still unimaginable tragedy and De la Rosa also addressed how the changes in living in NYC after 9/11 coupled with the loss of riding spots had a tangible affect on riders in NYC.

ASP Quiksilver Pro NYC East Coast Surf

The Quiksilver Pro New York slid into Long Island?s Long Beach September 4-15, 2011. The Quiksilver Pro Trials/Quiksilver World Title New York was the 6th stop on the 2011 ASP World Tour and the first-ever ASP World Tour stop on the US East Coast, offering up an unprecedented $1 million dollar prize purse. The NYC event expanded the Quiksilver Pro Global Series, which includes the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast in Australia (February 26-March 9) and the Quiksilver Pro France (October 4-15).

Hurricane Katia offshore sent in some huge swells to make this a legit surf contest on the shores of the Atlantic. Owen Wright, who was defeated by Kelly Slater in August at the Billabong Pro in Tahiti, got to stand on the top of the podium in Long Beach, NY with Slater taking second.
