CNBC special report: The coffee addiction

There was a time in America when coffee was just a drink. Today, it's something more. It's fancier, tastier, pricier ? a magic elixir that satisfies our collective craving and our national addiction to caffeine.

If there?s any doubt that America has become a coffee nation, the proof can be found at the U.S. Barista Championship, where connoisseurs battle for a $5,000 cash prize and a shot at making it to the world championship. Top honors are given for the best cup o? joe in the country. Coffee slinging was once a job. Today, it?s a calling.

?We?re going to give people what they want,? said Joshua Boyt, 29, a barista and the owner of Metronome outside Seattle. ?That?s what coffee is about. It?s an experience.?

?Barista? is Italian for bartender, and just like making a perfect martini, there?s a lot of skill required of these ambassadors of coffee.

?We?ve been inspired by a product,? said Boyt. ?We?ve been inspired by the world?s production of this amazing thing. And honestly we?ve just been taken away by this river of passion.?

Just as passionate about coffee is Melissa Owens, 29, one-time cover girl for Barista Magazine ? a publication that?s considered the bible for coffee enthusiasts. Owens was a pre-med student before finding her life?s work. And she?s the first to admit her devotion to coffee might be a bit extreme, right down to her tattoos.

?I have latte art tattoos,? she said. ?I just caught the bug and became obsessed. Everything has to do with coffee, or it came from coffee in my life.?

Coffee is certainly a national obsession. Americans drink over 400 million cups of it each day. Though coffeehouses are the fastest growing part of the restaurant industry, some 86 percent of Americans still get their morning fix at home from top supermarket sellers like Maxwell house and Folgers.

Whether store-bought or Starbucks, the secret to coffee is in the roasting, according to electrical engineer Marty Curtis.

?Coffee roasting is an art,? he said. ?If you make the roaster run to where it?s easy for the person roasting it to manipulate the air flow in the burners, they can do a much better job on the coffee.?

Building and fixing coffee roasters has made Curtis a wealthy man. He has traveled the world perfecting his art.

?I like to build Harleys; I was building choppers back in the 80s,? he said. ?Then I thought, well why not do that to a roaster? And so I started hot-rodding roasters.?

In a caffeinated cup of coffee, green coffee beans are roasted for 12 minutes or so. The longer they?re roasted, the stronger the taste. For decaf, the green coffee beans are soaked in a substance that extracts the caffeine. Once removed, the extra caffeine is sold to pharmaceutical companies or soda and energy drink makers for use in their products.

Story: Even in a down economy, pork rinds crackle

Taste is important, but it?s the caffeine that keeps us coming back, according to journalist Stephen Braun, the author of ?Buzz: The Science and Lore of Alcohol and Caffeine.? He says caffeine?s physical effect fuels the entire coffee industry.

?It?s a perfectly legitimate business,? he said. ?But if they didn?t have a drug in their product they wouldn?t have a business. It?s stimulating and also, mildly habit forming. Therefore you are highly motivated to keep drinking coffee in this case. So, it?s a great business to be in.?

Caffeine is a classified drug, and like any drug it triggers a reaction that varies from person to person. While some people swallow 10 cups a day, others get by on just one ? or none.

The truth is we only think we need coffee, according to Dr. Peter Martin, professor of psychiatry and pharmacology at Vanderbilt University?s School of Medicine.

?One of the important distinctions between drinking coffee and an addiction is not having balance in your life,? he said.

Martin has spent the last 15 years studying the effects of caffeine. Some of his funding has come from coffee companies like Nestle and Starbucks.

?The medical consensus points towards the caffeine fix as less of an addiction and more of a physical dependence, with its own set of withdrawal symptoms including migraines and mood alterations,? he said.

?If you drink coffee regularly and then one day not drink coffee then you might develop a headache or you might really want that cup of coffee,? he added. ?But you're not going to rob a bank or kill your wife to get that cup of coffee.?

Martin notes that caffeine has one very important physical effect: it combats the natural urged to sleep. Some chemicals in the brain help maintain wakefulness, while others cause drowsiness. One of them ? adenosine -- makes you feel tired. Caffeine blocks the adenosine from doing its job, so you feel more alert and awake.

While a jolt of java overrides the body?s natural response, Martin says this is not a habit that needs breaking.

?I was taught in medical school that coffee was bad for your health,? he said. ?But when I started looking at the literature, one of the things that was so interesting was that not only is coffee not harmful to health, it may actually be beneficial.?

A Harvard School of Public Health study found that long-term, moderate coffee drinking could help prevent the onset of such illnesses as Type II diabetes and Parkinson's.

That could be good news for the millions of people for whom life without coffee would be unbearable.

Alexis Abramson, Ph.D.: Corporate America's Looming Caregiver Crisis

I recently gave a keynote speech to a room comprised of 1,000 or so "C-level" female executives -- the topic was how to balance caregiving and a career.

As take-charge women they were there to learn tools to help them cope with the arduous tasks associated with caregiving for an aging loved one while simultaneously keeping up with the intense demands of their careers. I decided to kickoff my presentation by asking the audience how many of them had employee benefit packages that included eldercare options.

To my absolute amazement less than 100 people raised their hand! A myriad of questions began racing through my mind... Do they even know what I'm talking about when I say eldercare benefits? If so, did they not inquire as to whether this benefit was a part of their "package" when they were hired? Are eldercare benefits actually not currently being offered as an employment benefit these days? I was astonished...

As the number of employees juggling the care of an older loved one escalates, these working caregivers are increasingly torn between the pressing needs of their families and unyielding obligations to their employers. Clearly, most employers fail to recognize the overwhelming consequences of their employees unresolved eldercare issues -- the outcome of this oversight will most certainly create a sobering financial hit to these organizations' bottom line.

A recent survey conducted by MetLife, which estimates the aggregate cost of caregiving in lost productivity to United States businesses at approximately $34 billion per year, irrefutably elucidates this assumption! Yet to my incredulity, only about one in four companies currently offer elder care benefits.

Even if corporate eldercare benefits do exist on paper, most employees say their supervisor's negative attitude toward eldercare heavily influences their limited use of these perks. Apparently many managers are perceived to be sending mixed signals if employees try to use these benefits. This seems especially prevalent in the case of an older employee and a younger manager, in which the manager may not have had any previous experience caregiving for an aging loved one.

With that being said, it's estimated that supervisors spend 55.7 million hours of company time per year dealing with issues specifically related to employed caregivers, for a total cost to businesses of over $800 million annually.

This impending "employee caregiving crisis" is not surprising however, when you consider that an estimated 65 million people -- 29 percent of the United States population -- currently provide informal care for a chronically ill, disabled or aged family member or friend during any given year. It's alarming to note that most caregivers are cited as tending to their parents, or other mature relatives, an average of 20 hours per week -- 13 percent of family caregivers report that they actually provide an astounding 40 hours (or more) of care a week.

As of January 1st 2011, each day 10,000 baby boomers turn 65 years of age -- the average 65-year-old today can expect to live another 20.4 years. Statistics show that 85 percent of persons 65 years of age, and over, will require some form of caregiving assistance within their lifetime. These figures are undoubtedly expected to rise significantly as our population continues to "age up" appreciably over the next decade.

Providing eldercare can be an unexpected rollercoaster of emotional, physical, and financial drains for caregivers. It's this complex and unpredictable maelstrom that exemplifies the need for companies to be aware of, and prepared for, the demands of employees providing care.

The most common challenges that employed caregivers face include: taking unpaid leaves of absence or using personal or sick days to provide care; coming to work late/leaving work early; refusing relocation or work-related travel; and declining overtime work or new assignments. If employers want to sustain a healthy work environment and the highest level of productivity, they must support "caregiver-friendly" policies that include innovative eldercare benefits.

The issue of eldercare benefits has become especially important to women, inasmuch as they make up approximately 66 percent of the caregivers in the U.S. The typical family caregiver is a 49-year-old woman caring for her widowed 69-year-old mother who doesn't (currently) live with her. She's married, employed and more than 37 percent of these female caregivers have children or grandchildren under 18 years old also living with them. This group is commonly referred to as the "sandwich generation" and is made up of those folks who are caught between taking care of their aging loved ones and their children simultaneously.

During the 2009 economic downturn, 1 in 5 family caregivers stated that their finances were so strained that they were forced to move into the same home with their aging loved ones to cut down on their annual expenses. Incredibly, 47 percent of working caregivers indicate that an increase in caregiving expenses has caused them to use up all or most of their savings. It's estimated that the average family caregiver spends at least $5,500 per year on out-of-pocket caregiving expenses -- long distance caregivers are projected to be spending in excess of $8,500 annually!

Caregivers' health is unquestionably being negatively impacted with over 20 percent of family caregivers self-reporting their health is "fair or poor" at best. Some 63 percent of caregivers report having poorer eating habits than non-caregivers and 58 percent indicate worse exercise habits than before caregiving responsibilities. In addition, over 20 percent of employed female caregivers report symptoms of depression compared to 8 percent of their non-caregiving peers. Not to mention, family caregivers experiencing extreme stress have been shown to "age" prematurely -- it's estimated that this level of stress can take as much as 10 years off a family caregiver's life!

With all of this being said, and at the risk of sounding completely dismissive, I do want to take a moment to give a "shout out" to a few of the companies that are offering at least some type of eldercare benefits:

Prudential Financial -- they let workers make a $100 co-payment and hire a geriatric-care specialist.

McGraw-Hill -- permits employees to enroll one other adult family member, which can be an elderly relative, on their health-insurance plan at regular family rates.

Verizon Communications -- (the Verizon Wireless division) offers emergency in-home care, and has even extended the benefit to some part-time employees.

Freddie Mac
-- offers monthly support groups for those caring for family members and provides emergency elder home care, for which employees pay $15 a day.

AstraZeneca -- employees can get six hours a year with a geriatric care expert who will help them access, and hopefully palliate, their caregiving situation.

IBM -- offers discounted long-term-care insurance, an ambulance at the touch of a button, and free software to assist employees who are using the internet to find caregiver resources.

The rest of corporate America must wake up and start to recognize these seemingly perennial caregiving trends -- if for no other reason than to strengthen their bottom line! Employees caring for elderly loved ones cost employers 8 percent more in health care expenses -- estimated to be worth $13.4 billion per year.

Recently released research indicated that six in 10 family caregivers are currently employed. 66 percent of these employees stated that they've routinely been forced to make some adjustments to their work life, from reporting late to work to giving up work entirely; and one in five family caregivers have had to take a family leave of absence.

Eldercare in the workplace, although still largely unaddressed, has become one of the fastest growing work-family employee challenges to emerge in the past decade.? Eldercare is indeed quickly catching up to childcare as the "hot button issue" facing personnel today and these employees indubitably deserve to understand how their employers will be assisting them -- emotionally, physically and financially -- to help stabilize this ongoing caregiving crisis.

Alexia Abramson, Ph.D. is cited as America's leading, impassioned champion for the dignity and independence of those over 50. Awesome Energy Audit Virginia Facts | Weight Watcher

Auditing one?s residence is really nothing new. In a state like Virginia, which is one of a few states that go through seasonal extremes, residents habitually and knowingly check on the flow of energy or thermal profile of their homes. This way, they regulate how they use energy in the proper manner and they also have energy audit Virginia.

Using simpler terms, an energy audit evaluates your home for energy efficiency and suggests cost effective ways to prevent wastage. The main purpose for this is to protect you from harmful elements such as extreme heat and colds. In addition, you will know where to regulate your usage of energy to lessen operating costs.

An energy audit is usually done this way. Several detecting devices will be used to study the physical components of your house. An auditor will test for the air tightness of the building to establish its capacity to retain or deflect heat and cold.

Your heating and cooling appliances may also contribute in the wastage of energy if left uncared for. External factors are also taken in stock. The auditor will even study your compilation of billings from the electrical and gas companies.

In addition to the high tech gadgets, determining energy use would definitely necessitate interviewing you, the primary user of energy. You will be asked about your daily habits, pattern of use, and the age of your home. The ratio of people using specific devices at a time can influence energy consumption.

The goal here is to eliminate all irrelevant expenditures without sacrificing comfort. You might be even given a chance to renovate your home through government sponsored energy saving programs. Having your home audited is something that you?ll never regret.

Generally, you can get home audit services from energy companies as well as home improvement companies. Some, like Energy Max Solutions provide a detailed report from the evaluation in your home with accompanying recommended solutions for your specific needs. Some businesses in this sector do not only perform audits but also implement solutions for most energy loss problems.

Energy audits are done in three different ways. The simplest type of audit covers the assessment of building though inspection and interview which lasts for about an hour. It is also called screening audit or walk-through audit.

A general audit differs from preliminary audit in the sense that it includes the use of professional tools to produce more accurate diagnosis of the structure. Be prepared to present your utility bills for their expert appraisal. Commercial buildings employ investment grade assessment to ensure that the money they spent will not be wasted.

Contact local energy audit companies in Virginia to find out how you can take advantage of this great opportunity. According to the National Association of Home Builders, there has been an overall increase in energy efficiency in Virginia homes in recent years. It is evident that energy firms have succeeded in their campaign against energy wastage.

There are many energy-saving techniques that we could come up with, if we will only try harder.

Govt won't seek appeal in Atlanta on health care

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Obama administration has decided not to ask a federal appeals court in Atlanta for further review of a ruling striking down the centerpiece of President Barack Obama's sweeping health care overhaul.

The administration's decision makes it more likely that the U.S. Supreme Court would hear a case on the health care overhaul in the court's term starting next month, and render its verdict on the law in the midst of the 2012 presidential election campaign.

Justice Department spokeswoman Tracy Schmaler disclosed the administration's decision. She declined to elaborate on next moves.

The Atlanta circuit ruling sided with 26 states that had sued to stop the law from taking effect. In another case, the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati upheld the individual mandate in June.

A three-judge panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Va., rejected two lawsuits on technical grounds. In one, it ruled that the penalty for not buying insurance amounts to a tax and that a tax can't be challenged before it's collected. In the other, the panel said the plaintiff, the state of Virginia, lacked legal standing to file its lawsuit.

In a ruling in August, a divided three-judge panel of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta concluded Congress overstepped its authority when lawmakers passed the individual mandate provision that requires people to buy health insurance. The administration could have asked the full 11th circuit court to hear the case, potentially delaying high court review.

The U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, the fourth appeals court to deal with a case over the law, heard oral arguments last Friday but hasn't issued a ruling.

The Supreme Court is widely expected to have the final say on the law, especially now that the appeals courts that have considered the law have disagreed, and one of them has struck down a key provision.

The real question has been over timing, which has political as well as legal ramifications.

In order to hear and decide the case by late June, when the court wraps up its work until resuming in October, the justices would have to act by January to accept and schedule an appeal.

It typically takes a couple of months or more from the time an appeal is filed at the court until the justices decide whether or not to hear it.

In arguments leading up to the appeals court decision in Atlanta, the Obama administration said the legislative branch was using a "quintessential" power ? its constitutional ability to regulate interstate commerce, including the health care industry ? when it passed the overhaul law. Administration officials said at the time they were confident the 11th Circuit ruling would not stand.

In that August ruling, Chief Judge Joel Dubina and Circuit Judge Frank Hull said that lawmakers cannot require residents to "enter into contracts with private insurance companies for the purchase of an expensive product from the time they are born until the time they die."

In a lengthy dissent, Circuit Judge Stanley Marcus accused the majority of ignoring the "undeniable fact that Congress' commerce power has grown exponentially over the past two centuries." He wrote that Congress generally has the constitutional authority to create rules regulating large areas of the national economy.

    >> thank you.

    >> he had some pretty ugly comments posted online to him, i'm going to read a couple of them to you because i know you're here because you want to make a difference so let's talk about that. some of the comments were "jamey, you're stupid, gay, fat and ugly. he must die." another post read "i wouldn't care if you died, no one would, so just do it. it would make everyone way more happier." these comments, is it true, continued even after he died?

    >> yes. yes, it was the first day of his wake, and my daughter, we let her go to the school dance because it was homecoming week that jamey was really looking forward to, and we thought it would be great for her to be with all her friends and she was texting that she was having a great time, then all of a sudden a lady gaga song came on and they call started chanting for jamey, all his friends and whatever, and then the bullies that put him into this situation started chanting "you're better off dead , we're glad you're dead," and things like that and my daughter came home all upset, and you know, it was supposed to be a time for her to grieve and have fun with her friends, and it turned into bullying even after he's gone.

    >> there are more than 4,500 suicides committed by people ages between the ages of 10 and 24, last year, in the united states . do you see, and many we don't know how many but some of those kids, perhaps a lot of them, a significant number even perhaps, are gay kids. do you see that this could be part of a bigger problem?

    >> oh, definitely. i mean, jamey's been talking about bullying as a whole since he was in fifth grade, and it's just as time goes by, we're hearing, you know, more and more stories, just in the couple days of his wake and the day of his funeral, all of the parents and kids that have come to us and seen, you know, just telling us about what is still happening out there, and what is happening, all of them saying oh my kids were bullied, they were bullied for three years or i'm a kid and i've been bullied for the last two or three years and all the same story and it's just got to stop.

    >> do you think our churches, our politicians and other adults who adhere to an anti-gay message enable some of this hate?

    >> yes, i think it does. people have different views on things, and if you believe in homosexuality is right or wrong, that's your right as an american, but it's no reason to bully someone, and hate them.

    >> and make them feel worthless.

    >> i know you were very -- i'm going to point out you're wearing a bandana that jamey wore, says gaga on this.

    >> he made this and said he was going to wear it every day of the school year.

    >> you're wearing a shirt that says "it gets better" wearing fwa ga on your arms, and you're pointing out lady gaga because as we saw in the piece she dedicated a song to him, said jamey, i know you're up there looking at us, you're not a victim, and also ricky martin tweeted his 4 million followers saying how many lives do we have to lose to finally stop the harassment, hatred, bigotry and abuse? only after his death did you see what he had posted online, jamey, he said "i always say how bullied i am, but no one listens. what do i have to do so that people will listen to me?" did he confide his feelings to you? did you wish he confided more?

    >> back in fifth, sixth and seventh grade he used to talk about it openly. he had a rough three years. eighth grade went pretty darned good but it was more sticking up to are other people and this year everything seemed to be going wonderful for him. he asked him every day after school, you know, what's going on? are you getting bullied, and he just kept it in, and was putting on the brave face for everybody, and had he said it once to me, you know, because i asked him, has it followed you to high school , and he said no to us. had he once said it --

    >> but you don't want that brave face to be the last part of the story. you say you don't want him to die in vain. what is your message to parents listening right now, some of whom are parents of gay children, some of whom know their kids have been bullied in the past, and who want to protect their children from this kind of feeling of worthlessness that your son felt after all of this bullying. what do you want to say about it?

    >> my message to the parents is badger your kids and make them talk or get them the help they need. there's lots and lots of other people that maybe they'll talk to. there's a lot of organizations out there that maybe they'll talk to, but get them to talk. we try to get jamey to talk to us constantly, and he just kept it in. he just put up a brave face but just don't let it go, if you know they've been bullied in the past, keep on them, go to the school, do whatever you have to, to make sure that they're getting the help they need.

    >> you had a beautiful boy .

    >> yes, he'll forever be in our hearts.

    >> and i can see that you are firmly committed to making sure we remember who he was and what he stood for.

    >> yes, and basically we say we can't do this on our own but we are going to carry on jamey's mission and everyone across america, across the world, whatever anybody can do to stand up for everybody, everybody else .

    >> tracy and tim rodemeyer, thank you so much.

    >> thank you.

Official: Wallenberg possibly outlived death date (AP)

MOSCOW ? Raoul Wallenberg, who saved tens of thousands of Hungarian Jews before vanishing into Soviet captivity, may have been alive after the official 1947 date of his death ? but only for a few days, says the chief archivist of Russia's counterintelligence service.

The disappearance of the 32-year-old Swedish diplomat is an abiding mystery of World War II. His defiance of the Nazis is commemorated worldwide in statues, in streets named for him and in postage stamps bearing his likeness, and to this day inspires scholarly articles, popular books and Hollywood movies.

It also has been a perpetual embarrassment for Moscow, which has failed to dislodge a stubborn belief, supported by credible if unsubstantiated evidence, that Wallenberg lived like a ghost in the Soviet gulag for up to four decades after his alleged death.

In a rare hourlong interview with The Associated Press, Lt. Gen. Vasily Khristoforov acknowledged that the Soviet version of Wallenberg's death of a heart attack could have been fabricated and that his captors may have "helped him die." He sought to counter accusations that his agency was hiding the truth, but his account and comments from independent researchers only underscored the possibility that the Wallenberg riddle will never be fully laid to rest.

Although he stopped short of discarding the official Soviet version of Wallenberg's death, his remarks ? coming from a custodian of the country's most closely guarded intelligence secrets ? represent a crack in the wall of official Russian reticence about Wallenberg. And while he didn't cite any new evidence, the general said that his statements were based on his knowledge of materials related to the fate of numerous other victims of repression.

Khristoforov denied that the Russian Federal Security Service ? the successor to the KGB ? is withholding any information on Wallenberg, and said that all documentary evidence on the Swede likely was methodically destroyed in the 1950s to cover up his fate. Still, he said, his department was continuing to search the archives for clues.

He discounted numerous accounts by former prisoners who claimed to have seen Wallenberg, or someone who might have been him, in prison or in labor camps after his purported death. Independent researchers cite compelling reports of "sightings" of Wallenberg, identified by another name or only a number, as late as the 1980s.

"I consider all that to be a product of these people's imagination," the general said, insisting he was "100 percent certain ... that Wallenberg never was in any other prison, either under his name or an alias."

Khristoforov spoke in response to allegations by two researchers last month that the Russian archives still conceal information on Wallenberg or people who came into contact with him. The accusations came after Moscow released new material about a German officer, Willy Roedel, who shared a prison cell with Wallenberg, although it was unrelated to the Swede himself.

"It's naive to accuse us of concealing the existence of the interrogation protocols. There is a mix-up of things here," he said. "There is no mention, not even a hint at Wallenberg in Roedel's materials."

He said the archives had kept some pages from Roedel's newly released file classified for other reasons which he did not reveal.

Khristoforov confirmed a report published last year by Wallenberg researchers Susanne Berger and Vadim Birstein, who cited his agency as saying that the mysterious Prisoner No. 7, who was interrogated in Lubyanka, the prison of the Soviet secret police in Moscow, on July 23, 1947 could have been Wallenberg. The official version of Wallenberg's death, given 10 years later, was that he died of a heart attack on July 17, 1947.

Khristoforov said he was "more than convinced that if he outlived the official date of his death, it could only have been by a few days."

While not ruling out the Soviet official version of Wallenberg's death of a heart attack, he said that "the second version is that they could have helped him die."

The heart attack version has already been undermined by Alexander Yakovlev, one-time chairman of a presidential panel investigating the fate of repression victims, who in 2000 said he was told by a former KGB chief that Wallenberg was killed at Lubyanka. That year, Russia conceded that the Soviet authorities wrongfully persecuted Wallenberg and posthumously rehabilitated him as a victim of political repression.

Khristoforov said it was highly unlikely that he would have been held in another prison because "it would have been impossible to keep that secret for long, even under an alias or a number."

Berger, a German, and Birstein, a Russian, served on the Swedish-Russian Working Group that investigated the case from 1991 to 2001.

In an email to AP, Berger said she remained unconvinced that all available evidence has been disclosed, citing the Russians' history of "incremental revelations" of material that they previously had denied existed. She said that if the Russians had provided full access to the Roedel file, for example, enough "secondary information" might be discerned by trained researchers to shed new light on the case.

"With no unambiguous proof that Wallenberg died on July 17, 1947, and only circumstantial evidence that he may have died some time later, and numerous unresolved witness testimonies stating that Wallenberg was alive in later years, how can Mr. Khristoforov exclude the possibility that Wallenberg did not survive as a secret inmate?" asked Berger.

Susan Mesinai, an American researcher who scoured prison archives for three years in the 1990s with Russian cooperation, said Khristoforov's conclusions were based on analogies, coincidences and intuition against "decades of state-of-the-art scientific and historical research."

As Sweden's envoy in Budapest from July 1944, Wallenberg saved 20,000 Jews by giving them Swedish travel documents or moving them to safe houses, and dissuaded German officers from massacring the 70,000 inhabitants of the city's ghetto.

he was arrested in January, 1945. While the Soviets never gave a reason, Khristoforov, who considers Wallenberg a hero, shares the widely held belief that they suspected he was a spy.

In fact, Wallenberg had been recruited by a U.S. intelligence agent, with Swedish government approval, on behalf the War Refugee Board created by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. But he is not known to have been engaged in intelligence-gathering.

Some historians say Soviet dictator Josef Stalin may have hoped to exchange Wallenberg for Soviet defectors who fled to Sweden, or use him as a bargaining chip in relations with Sweden or other Western nations, but then changed his mind for unknown reasons.

Life Restructured: My New Approach to Work, Home & Family ...

Over the past couple months, I've focused on creating a full-time freelance writing career and it has already grown beyond my expectations. New and engaging projects and clients are coming in at a steady pace and I'm having a blast working with inspiring people on content-editing and ghostwriting. Plus, I'm exploring new topics everyday through my freelance assignments. I even found the time to put together my first mini-ebook on Bliss Chasing! But with success comes challenges, like figuring out how to restructure my life to make way for family, work, home, and myself.

My strategy is a work in progress, but here's what I'm striving for each day:

    1. Be flexible: There's a new sheriff in town and she weighs about 14 pounds. That means that I need to be ready to put on my writer hat as soon as she takes a snooze or my husband walks in the door. Nights and weekends are now prime time work hours. I thought this would bum me out, but now that I'm getting more sleep, I enjoy "getting away" for a few hours at a time to concentrate on work. As an added bonus, I get some time to myself each day.

    2. Be present: My baby girl might not feel like taking a nap when it's most convenient for my schedule. Instead of worrying about when the work will get done or becoming impatient, I switch gears and remind myself of how lucky I am to be at home with her. Then, I focus on getting a smile out of my little one and devise a strategy for getting the project done later. I also plan out my assignments so that there's always a time cushion:)

    3. Be bold: It's easy to feel stuck because you don't know exactly how to do something. I was talking to a client the other day who didn't know how to approach the first chapter of her new book. "Just start somewhere," I said. "You'll find your way from there." That's how I've been tackling my freelance work. Interview by interview, word by word, it all makes sense in time. And I'm learning so much! If I turned down projects because I didn't have every answer mapped out right away, I'd miss out on so many exciting opportunities.

    4. Be unconventional: It's midnight and my baby girl and husband are asleep upstairs. The house is quiet, my mind is clear, and I feel at ease. These aren't typical working hours, but they work for me right now. I take advantage of moments that some people may not see as opportunities for work: reading articles while feeding my little one, writing an ebook while visiting my in-laws (childcare!), completing mindless (but necessary) tasks like the dishes and laundry when I'm too fried for words, and the list goes on.

Whenever I do feel doubtful or worried about something getting done, whether it's work, family, or house related, I've learned to let go of my attachment to plans and answers. "Is everything okay right now?" I ask myself. "Can I handle the next fifteen minutes?" Usually the answer is yes, and usually that's enough to make me forget my fears and forge forward.

    Happy bliss chasing,
    Corinne

Cash-Strapped Americans Can?t Break the Overdraft Habit.
Overdraft fees are like a movie monster that just won?t die. No amount of public outrage or regulation can slay the beast. Your Business Needs Its Own Credit, Too. One of the temptations of starting your own business is that it is easy to use your own personal credit to get things going. WASHINGTON (AP) ? Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner wants faster and bolder action to deal with the European debt crisis, and he's calling that crisis the most serious risk to the global economy.

Geithner tells leaders of the International Monetary Fund that without more decisive moves, there's a risk of domino-style defaults by European countries.

He says critical decisions cannot wait until the crisis grows more severe.

Geithner has a specific request for the European Central Bank, which serves as the central bank for the 17 nations that use the euro currency. He wants the bank to make sure that countries that are pursuing credible reform programs have access to capital.

The treasury secretary spoke to the IMF on Saturday.

What Should You Spend On Real Estate Marketing? ? Your Real ...

Written By: Maria - Sep? 23?11

How much do real estate agents spend in marketing their websites and properties?

According to the survey, real estate professionals who have more than 10 years of experience had average listings of $600 and agents with 2-5 years of experience had listings in the $490 range. Experienced real estate professionals spend more on listings and the longer the agent has been in the market, the more they spend on properties. This is what the results say in a VHT survey of agents? and brokers? allocation of marketing dollars for print, TV, direct mail and online.

However, finding an average figure might be hard because real estate marketing varies by agent, company or firm, location and so on. But generally, we hear a lot of real estate agents saying they use 10% of all income towards marketing.

If you are entering the real estate market as a real estate agent, one of the most important questions that you have to mull over is ?how much should you be spending on marketing and what?s the most effective way to market your Homes in Fort Collins Colorado??

Buyers, sellers and investors of real estate properties vary and generally these groups? age range from those in the retirement years to those in the late twenties. In this case, you can use different media to market your properties from young investors to senior individuals or families. So this means that you would be spending on online marketing, print advertising, and so on. Thus, answering this million dollar question depends on the type of audience you want to reach.

We also depend heavily on direct mail marketing. It?s important to use companies that allow you to drill down to a specific audience. As an example, for buying, we pick neighborhoods we prefer and then detail further to find properties we want. Some drill-down items include: age of home, owner or non-owner occupied, age of mortgage, free-and-clear, etc., all directed at getting to the specific seller we want to buy from. We then send postcards to those targeted homes with the message we want them to receive.

Real estate agents spend more on marketing properties because they know what marketing strategies are the best for Parker CO Homes. They might spend a lot but these are good strategies for a successfull real estate marketing making sure that Thornton CO Homes are sold efficiently and profitably.

Alright, I was meandering through the rolepays and everything right? Well, I saw a Guyver roleplay. It was titled, "Guver; Rebirth of Humanity". Andy Warhol's art takes stage on National Mall | Palm Beach ...

    By BRETT ZONGKER

Andy Warhol is known for soup cans and celebrity images, not so much for painting headlines and abstract works.

The late pop artist has left much to be discovered in two shows that open Sunday on the National Mall in Washington.

The National Gallery of Art is opening its first Warhol exhibit with ?Warhol: Headlines,? an examination of his use of news headlines throughout his career. At the same time, the Smithsonian?s Hirshhorn Museum will feature ?Andy Warhol: Shadows,? a 450-foot-long installation in the round museum that marks the first time all of Warhol?s 102 abstract ?shadow? paintings will be shown together as the artist intended.

?This might surprise people,? said Hirshhorn curator Evelyn Hankins. ?They get two very different sides of Warhol.?

Besides his obsession with celebrities and iconic images, it turns out Warhol was a news junkie. At a time when nearly everyone on the New York City subway had a newspaper in hand, Warhol was watching, fascinated by the consumption of news.

?Probably for him, it was like a kid in a candy store,? said Matt Wrbican, archivist at The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. ?He was a news hound.?

Soon Warhol was sketching his own versions of the New York Daily News, the National Enquirer and The Wall Street Journal in the 1950s, mimicking their layouts and tweaking their headlines.

His first painting of a front page, ?A Boy for Meg,? in 1962 is a near exact replica of a New York Post page announcing the first-child born of Princess Margaret of Great Britain.

Warhol used a projector to trace the newspaper with his brush, though he left out the Post?s copyright line. Such work was a precursor to later artists who have been sued for similarly tracing news images.

The piece inspired curator Molly Donovan of the National Gallery of Art to look closer at Warhol?s use of the news.

?By enlarging the front page of the tabloid source on which it?s based, this painting signifies the immediacy Warhol conveyed in his art and tells us that something as mundane as the daily newspaper can indeed be grand,? she said.

Donovan eventually brought together about 80 paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, sculptures and videos from Warhol?s career that carry the theme ? and 40 percent of them have never been shown publicly before.

The works include a commissioned piece from 1981 to commemorate an Italian earthquake. Warhol blew up a newspaper headline reading ?Fate Presto,? which translates to ?Hurry Up,? to emphasize the human toll. It?s being shown in the U.S. for the first time.

?Headlines? will be on view until January when the exhibit travels to the Museum fur Moderne Kunst in Frankfurt, Germany, followed by the Galleria nazionale d?arte moderna in Rome and The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh.

Another of Warhol?s most overlooked pieces, ?Flash,? is on view in full for the first time, Wrbican said. Warhol created the installation in 1968 to mark the fifth anniversary of President John F. Kennedy?s assassination. It includes teletype newswire accounts from The Associated Press and others, along with 14 images to show how news of Kennedy?s death unfolded.

?Flash: Dallas ? Two priests summoned to Kennedy in emergency room,? one line reads, followed by ?Flash: President Kennedy died at 1 p.m. (CST).?

The show closes with a nod to Madonna. In 1985, Warhol teamed up with Keith Haring to make a wedding gift for their friend before her marriage to Sean Penn. They replaced a New York Post image on the front page with a picture of the couple under the headline: ?Madonna on nude pix: So What!?

At the Hirshhorn, curators timed the ?Shadows? exhibit to coincide with the ?Headlines? show, as well as a film festival and other events.

Warhol created his colorful ?shadows? in 1979 as a play on abstract expressionism, Hankins said. He did it his own way, though, painting his silkscreen images with a mop. That began nearly 10 years of other abstract works.

?I?ve come to realize we?re just beginning to understand this prolific artist?s work,? Donovan said. ?I?ll never be able to glance casually at the tabloids in the grocery store again.?
