Implementing The Lower Thames Flood Risk Management Strategy ...

Teddington - flood

In 2009, the Environment Agency held a series of public meetings to outline its plans to reduce the potential flood risk of the Lower Thames floodplain from Datchet to Teddington area. The area from Datchet to Teddington has been classified by the EA as one of the highest flood risk areas in England. Because of this, The Lower Thames Flood Risk Management Strategy was agreed by DEFRA in July this year to reduce the risk of flooding to residents in the area through the following mitigation measures;

  • building three flood diversion channels;
  • improving some existing ?river weir structures;
  • providing some localised protection for groups of houses;
  • floodplain management;

However due to public spending cuts introduced by the Government, a review of the strategy has been held to identify how the scheme is intended to be progressed and implemented. Currently, 15,000 properties in the area have been designated as within an area of significant flood risk and the scheme cannot provide significant protection for the entire area. On a national scale, 1 in 6 properties are at risk from flooding and inundation can result in business disruption, reduce property prices and impact upon human health. Vendors need to be conscious and aware of the risk of purchasing/redeveloping in area designated as a flood plain as resistance and resilience flood protection are available. Although no statute legislation is in place to investigate flood risk other than when redeveloping in an EA designated flood plain, the law society have developed a Flood Practice note that highlights its importance which is currently impending.
