ANCHORAGE, Alaska ? A massive storm that battered Alaska's western coast with hurricane-strength winds and towering sea surges has passed the region in a much weaker state, leaving residents to assess the damage left behind.
Emergency responders are calling the storm an epic event that flooded the shoreline, ripped up roofs, tore off doors and knocked out power in scores of villages. They say the process of gauging the full damage will begin soon.
Forecasters say another storm is stepping in to replace the tempest, but the new storm is much weaker. It's expected to bring winds ranging from 20 to 40 mph.
The storm that pounded the Bering Sea coast this week carried gusts of nearly 90 mph and created tides as high as 10 feet above normal.
