The Evolution of the Telecoms Industry | Los Angeles Telephone Systems

Telecommunication is the name given to the act of transferring information over vast distances with the intention of communicating with others. The industry picked up with the telegraph, and expanded with the invention of the telephone, and is now so tied up with everything we do that it is impossible to consider us without it. This article is a quick look at how telecommunication evolved.

The Ancient Greeks began telecommunication by using hydraulic semaphore systems as early as the 4th century BC in order to communicate visually with each other, but only with rigidly predetermined messages. In the medieval times beacons were used from high places to give messages over miles. The Spanish Armada were seen from miles away, from Plymouth, and famously the message was sent to London via a long chain of beacons.

The industry really took off in 1839 when the first commercial electrical telegraph was created by Sir Charles Wheatstone and Sir William Fothergill Cooke. This, and the invention of Morse code by Samuel F. B. Morse, made people realise how quickly, easily, and conveniently large bodies of information could be transferred over vast distances. And this, of course, made industry boom when companies realised they could charge for providing these communication services.

Alexander Graham Bell deserves to be mentioned as the next big name in this history, for he is credited with the invention of the telephone. Commercial use was quite slow to get started, but once it did it grew to become an integral part of the way in which we live and conduct business. Because of the large amount of companies offering telephone services, just about everyone has them, because they are cheap and high quality.

The mobile phone, starting out as a walkie talkie for cars, has come on in leaps and bounds in the last few decades. Offering not only wireless portable voice communication, all of them now can connect wirelessly to the internet meaning that any given piece of information is instantly accessible wherever you are. The need for people to communicate, the innovation in technology and the competition of big players in the industry has meant that telecommunication is now something available to everyone.
