Slow To Rev Up, Gifts and User Promoted Posts Generated Under $5M In Facebook Q4 Revenue

344673538_d4961faa1c_zAs Facebook looks for new ways to make money, it disclosed during its Q4 2012 earnings call today that its Gifts product and promoted user posts functionality accounted for less than $5M of Facebook’s overall revenue. In fact, these earnings were labeled as revenue “outside of games.” Payments revenue was flat, overall, in the quarter. While this isn’t the worst thing in the world, it does show that Facebook’s slow rollout at the end of last year might have hurt its overall revenue. Slowly rolling it out was the right move for users and its product’s longterm health, but it does look like Gifts didn’t get the Christmas boom that the company had hoped for. When Facebook Gifts launched, our own Josh Constine discussed how the product could eventually earn upwards of $1B annually for the company. When I’ve used the products, I noticed that it’s difficult for people to accept their gifts, especially if they’re not a hardcore Facebook user. We’re told that this is an “early product” so we expect that the user experience will get better, and there will be more types of gifts available this year. We noted that Facebook has put the emphasis on buying someone a gift over leaving a note on someone’s Timeline for their birthday, and that is in hopes of kickstarting the product. It hasn’t happened, people are tight with their wallets and purses. As far as promoted posts from users, it’s something that nobody really understood why Facebook introduced it. It seems odd to want to pay money to “promote” your status update to people who are already your friends. As Facebook’s News Feed gets harder to follow, asking people to pay $7 is a bit of a stretch. To many, this seemed like a test just to see what would happen. [Photo credit: Flickr]

U.S. mom missing in Turkey took mysterious excursions

Sarai Sierra, the New York mother who disappeared in Turkey while on a solo trip, took several side excursions out of the country, but stayed in contact with her family the entire time, a family friend told ABC News.

Turkish media reported today that police were trying to establish why Sierra visited Amsterdam and Munich. Police were also trying to establish the identity of a man Sierra, 33, was chatting with on the Internet, according to local media.

Rachel Norman, a family friend, said the man was a group tour guide from the Netherlands and said Sierra stayed in regular touch with her family in New York.

Steven Sierra, Sarai's husband, and David Jimenez, her brother, arrived in Istanbul today to aid in the search.

The men have been in contact with officials from the U.S. consulate in the country and plan to meet with them as soon as they open on Tuesday, Norman said.

After that, she said Sierra and Jimenez would meet with Turkish officials to discuss plans and search efforts.

Sarai Sierra was supposed to fly back to the United States on Jan. 22, but she never showed up for her flight home.

Her two boys, ages 11 and 9, have not been told their mother is missing.

Sierra, an avid photographer, left New York on Jan. 7. It was her first overseas trip, and she decided to go ahead after a friend had to cancel, her family said.

"It was her first time outside of the United States, and every day while she was there she pretty much kept in contact with us, letting us know what she was up to, where she was going, whether it be through texting or whether it be through video chat, she was touching base with us," Steven Sierra told ABC News before he departed for Istanbul.

But when it came time to pick her up from Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey, Sierra wasn't on board her scheduled flight.

Steven Sierra called United Airlines and was told his wife had never boarded the flight home.

Further investigation revealed she had left her passport, clothes, phone chargers and medical cards in her room at a hostel in Beyoglu, Turkey, he said.

The family is suspicious and said it is completely out of character for the happily married mother, who met her husband in church youth group, to disappear.

The U.S. Embassy in Turkey and the Turkish National Police are involved in the investigation, WABC-TV reported.

"They've been keeping us posted, from my understanding they've been looking into hospitals and sending out word to police stations over there," Steven Sierra said. "Maybe she's, you know, locked up, so they are doing what they can."

Kyocera Torque coming to Sprint's Direct Connect lineup in March, we go hands-on (video)

Kyocera Torque

Going to be in the market for a new Direct Connect device soon, but the current offerings seem so... drab? Enter the Kyocera Torque, the latest Sprint smartphone featuring the network's CDMA-based Push-to-Talk service. The phone, which should be available sometime in early March, brings with it LTE connectivity, (mostly) stock Android 4.0, a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 Plus processor, HD Voice, 4-inch WVGA display, 4GB internal storage and a 2,500mAh battery. As you'd come to expect on a Direct Connect device, it's also certified mil-spec 810G and IP67 and is water-resistant (it can be in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes). It's also the first on this side of the Pacific to utilize Kyocera's Smart Sonic Receiver tissue-conduction tech, a system that foregoes the traditional earpiece and transmits audio to your ear via vibration.

The Torque packs a lot of average features that would likely put it somewhere in the mid-range (we haven't been given pricing yet), but it's definitely not going to win any beauty awards -- it's still a Direct Connect device, after all. Its outer layer is dressed with Dura-Grip and the phone is plenty bulky as a result; however, it's also much more durable than your standard piece of electronics. We threw the phone at the wall, slammed it repeatedly on the table, dunked it in water and even let it sit in ice for at least 20 minutes, all without incident.

On the software side, the Torque uses a version of stock Android 4.0 with only a small amount of tweaking. Essentially, the only major change added in by Sprint and Kyocera is Eco Mode, a power management system on the Torque that blocks background data connections for nonessential apps. We've put together a gallery of pics for you below, and follow us past the break for a full spec listing and our hands-on video.

Kyocera Torque specs:

  • Military spec 810G and IP67-certified
  • IPX5 / IPX7-certified "waterproof" (up to one meter for 30 minutes)
  • 5.54 ounces (157g)
  • 113 x 60.5 x 14.3mm (4.44 x 2.38 x 0.56 inches)
  • Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich)
  • 1.2GHz dual-core MSM8960 Snapdragon S4 Plus
  • 4-inch WVGA IPS display, Gorilla Glass 2
  • 1GB RAM
  • 4GB internal storage
  • MicroSD (up to 32GB)
  • 2,500mAh battery
  • 5MP rear camera, 1.3MP front-facing
  • NFC, WiFi b/g/n 2.4GHz, Bluetooth 4.0+LE/EDR
  • HD Voice

Mating Intelligence: Sex, Relationships, and the Mind's Reproductive System
Glenn Geher, Geoffrey Miller,
2007 | pages: 480 | ISBN: 0805857494 | PDF | 3,9 mb

Human intelligence is sexually attractive, and strongly predicts the success of sexual relationships, but the behavioral sciences have usually ignored the interface between intelligence and mating. This is the first serious scholarly effort to explore that interface, by examining both universal and individual differences in human mating intelligence. Contributors include some of the most prominent evolutionary psychologists and promising new researchers in human intelligence, social psychology, intimate relationships, and sexuality.

David Buss??? foreword and the opening chapter explore what ???mating intelligence??? means, and why it is central to human cognition and sexuality. The book???s six sections then examine (1) our mating mechanisms ??? universal emotional and cognitive adaptations for mating intelligently ??? that guide mate search, mate choice, and courtship; (2) how mating intelligence strategically guides our choice of mating tactics and partners given different relationship goals, personality traits, forms of deception, and the existence of children; (3) the genetic and psychiatric causes of individual differences in mating intelligence; (4) how we use mental fitness indicators ??? forms of human intelligence such as creativity, humor, and emotional intelligence ??? to attract and retain sexual partners; (5) the ecological and social contexts of mating intelligence; (6) integrative models of mating intelligence that can guide future research.

A Philadelphia Cancer Center Adds Electric-Based Method To Its ...

By Lynne Adkins

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) ? A local cancer center is using new electrical technology to treat inoperable tumors.

The ?Nanoknife? is able to target especially difficult tumors: those which can?t be removed because of their critical location, or those that have not responded to conventional treatment.

Dr. Steven Wagner, an interventional radiologist at Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Philadelphia, says the procedure begins with needles being placed through the skin and around the tumor.

?The device then applies a high-voltage, low-current electricity between the needles, through the tumor, allowing us to destroy or ablate the tumor,? he explains.

He says that because the Nanoknife technology doesn?t get hot like other procedures, it can be used to treat the mass without burning nearby tissue and organs ? and, if necessary, the procedure can be repeated.

(AP) ? Tens of thousands of mourners poured into the streets of the restive Egyptian city of Port Said on Sunday for a mass funeral for most of the 37 people killed in rioting a day earlier, chanting slogans against Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.

Violence erupted briefly when some in the crowd fired guns and police responded with volleys of tear gas, witnesses said. State television reported 110 were injured.

"We are very worried about what may happen after the burial," said local youth activist Rasha Hamouda, noting the city was fraught with tension.

There was also a funeral in Cairo for one of two policemen killed in the Port Said violence a day earlier. Several policemen grieving for two colleagues heckled Interior Minister Mohammed Ibrahim, who is in charge of the force, when he arrived for their funeral, according to witnesses. The angry officers screamed at the minister that he was only at the funeral for the TV cameras ? a highly unusual show of dissent in Egypt, where the police force maintains military-like discipline.

Ibrahim hurriedly left and the funeral proceeded without him.

The violence in the city, about 140 miles northeast of Cairo, broke out on Saturday after a court on Saturday convicted and sentenced 21 defendants to death for their roles in a mass soccer riot in a Port Said stadium on Feb. 1, 2012 that left 74 people dead. Most of those sentenced to death were local soccer fans from Port Said. The 21 were convicted on murder charges and the court is to rule on the remainder of the 73 defendants in March.

The riots stemmed mostly from animosity between police and die-hard Egyptian soccer fans, known as Ultras, who have become highly politicized. The Ultras frequently confront police and were also part of the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak's regime two years ago.

They were also at the forefront of protests against the military rulers who took over from Mubarak and are now again on the front lines of protests against the Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, the country's first freely elected leader.

Mourners chanted "There is no God but Allah," and "Morsi is God's enemy" as the funeral procession made its way through the city after prayers for the dead at the city's Mariam Mosque. Women clad in black led the chants, which were quickly picked up by the rest of the mourners.

There were no police or army troops in sight. But the funeral procession briefly halted after gunfire rang out. Security officials said the gunfire came from several mourners who opened fire at the Police Club next to the cemetery.

A witness said the police responded to the gunfire with volleys of tear gas. The witness and the officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation in the city on the Mediterranean at the northern tip of the Suez Canal.

Survivors and witnesses of the Port Said soccer melee blame Mubarak loyalists for the violence, saying they had a hand in instigating the killings. The troubles erupted after Port Said's home team Al-Masry beat Cairo's Al-Ahly 3-1. Some witnesses said "hired thugs" wearing green T-shirts and posing as Al-Masry fans led the attacks.

Other witnesses said at the very least, police were responsible for gross negligence in the soccer violence, which killed 74 people, most of them Al-Ahly fans.

Anger at police was evident in Port Said, home to most of the 73 men accused of involvement in the bloodshed.

The trial was in Cairo and Judge Sobhi Abdel-Maguid did not give his reasoning when he handed down the guilty verdicts and sentences for 21 defendants. Executions in Egypt are usually carried out by hanging.

Verdicts for the remaining 52 defendants, including nine security officials, are to be delivered on March 9. Some have been charged with murder and others with assisting the attackers. All the defendants ? who were not present in the courtroom Saturday for security reasons ? can appeal the verdict.

In Port Said on Sunday, army troops backed by armored vehicles staked out positions at key government facilities to protect state interests and try to restore order.

The military issued a statement urging Port Said residents to exercise restraint and protect public property, but also warning that troops would deal "firmly" with anyone who "terrorizes" citizens or infringes upon the nation's security and stability.

Rioters on Saturday attacked the prison where the defendants were being held and tried to storm police stations and government offices around the city. Health officials say at least 37 people were killed, including two policemen, in rioting on Saturday.

The clashes in Port Said were the latest in a bout of unrest across the country that has left a total of 48 people dead since Friday. That death toll includes 11 people killed in clashes between police and protesters marking the second anniversary of the uprising that overthrew Mubarak after nearly 30 years of authoritarian rule.

Clashes broke out in Cairo for the fourth straight day on Sunday, with protesters and police near central Tahrir Square, birthplace of the 2011 uprising. Police fired tear gas while protesters pelted them with rocks.

The clashes show how turmoil was deepening in Egypt nearly seven months after Morsi took office. Critics say Morsi has failed to carry out promised reforms of the judiciary and police, and claim little has improved in the two years since the uprising.

At the heart of the rising opposition toward Morsi's government is a newly adopted constitution, which was ratified in a nationwide referendum.

Opponents claim the document has an Islamist slant. It was drafted hurriedly by the president's allies without the participation of representatives of liberals and minority Christians on the panel that wrote the charter.

Protesters on the streets this past week demanded the formation of a national unity government, early presidential elections and amendments to disputed clauses in the constitution.

Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood, the Islamist group from which he hails, counter that the opposition was seeking to overturn the results of democratic and free elections. The Brotherhood, a well-organized and established political group in Egypt for decades, has emerged as by far the most powerful force in post-Mubarak Egypt.

As the situation in Port Said spiraled out of control Saturday, police disappeared from the city's streets, residents and security officials said, staying put in their camps, police stations and the city's security headquarters.

The military then dispatched troops to the city, taking up positions at vital state facilities, including the local power and water stations, the city's main courthouse, the local government building and the city prison. Navy sailors were guarding the local offices of the Suez Canal company.

Navy vessels were escorting merchant ships sailing through the international waterway, a vital income earner for Egypt's beleaguered economy. Military helicopters were flying over the canal to ensure the safety of shipping, according to Suez Canal spokesman Tareq Hassanein.

Residents said Port Said was quiet overnight except for intermittent bursts of gunfire. The city was still on edge early Sunday ? but streets were largely deserted, stores were closed for the second successive day, and some hotels asked guests to leave, fearing more violence.

Sunday Sound: Heard on 'This Week'

Tune in to the ABC News.com Live page on Monday morning starting at 9:30 a.m. EST for all-day live streaming video coverage of Inauguration 2013: Barack Obama. Live coverage will also be available on the ABC News iPad App and mobile devices.

Below are some of the notable comments made Sunday on "This Week with George Stephanopoulos." Guests included ABC News' George Will and Cokie Roberts; political strategist and ABC News political analyst Matthew Dowd; former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm, host of Current TV's "The War Room"; and 2012 Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum, chair of Patriot Voices.

POWERHOUSE ROUNDTABLE

1. Roberts says more women in the Senate may ease passage of Assault Weapons Ban ROBERTS: The assault weapons ban is obviously a huge problem, and that's what most people are pushing back against, although it is interesting, with the increased number of women in Congress, that it might have a better shot. In 1994, 29 percent of Republican men voted for the assault weapons ban and almost 70 percent of Republican women. So you could see a difference because of that.

2. Santorum tells Republicans to 'stick to our guns' SANTORUM: Oh, I think we should stick to our guns?.I think it's an even more important issue for people today, given the increasing level of violence in our society, people feel unsafe. And having a gun and gun ownership is part of how people can feel safer.

3. Granholm grills Santorum on his opposition to restrictions on armor-piercing bullets GRANHOLM: Why not armor-piercing bullets? Why do you need that?

SANTORUM: Because - because we're talking about a particular type of bullet that - that is - is and can be available to?

GRANHOLM: Deer don't wear armor. Why do you need an armor-piercing bullet?

SANTORUM: But criminals could. And having - having?

GRANHOLM: And police officers certainly do.

SANTORUM: ? the ability to defend - having the ability to defend yourself is something that is a right in our country.

4. Dowd calls the GOP a 'cult of no personality' DOWD: The Republicans are basically now a cult of no personality and no people, and they're going to have to figure out. And so each day goes forward, I think we're going to have an increasing inability for somebody to stand up and say, "I represent what the Republicans are."

5. Santorum blames Obama's 'sore winner' attitude for partisanship SANTORUM: I mean, listen to that language. I mean, Republicans extend an olive branch. "Ah, they're caving. Ah, we got them." That's not how a leader acts?.the president's a sore winner. Republicans understand that. And this president could get immigration done. He could get something done on deficits and entitlements, but he's got to move his people to do that, instead of forcing Republicans always to come his way. And that's the problem.

6. Santorum resists support of path to citizenship for illegal immigrants GRANHOLM: Immigration is going to be first up?.The real question is, will there be a consensus on a path to citizenship? ? SANTORUM: When you look back, Governor, there are 20 issues on immigration, and you just nailed the hardest one.

GRANHOLM: Right.

SANTORUM: And you're saying, OK, there's - you're only serious about doing something on immigration if you concede on the one that is the most difficult to occur.

GRANHOLM: So are you saying that won't - that won't be part of it?

SANTORUM: I think it is the toughest issue for Republicans?

7. Will suggests Republicans move to the left of Obama on immigration WILL: But here's where the Republicans are already setting themselves up for defeat. The president offers X. The Rubio program is X minus Y. All anyone is going to notice is the Y, that is, the failure to reach citizenship. So if the Republicans want to do this, they have to get to the left, if you will. They have to be more generous on immigration than the president.

8. Will asks, 'Who is innocent?' in sports WILL: The rewards of athletic excellence in this country are astonishingly high, and therefore the temptation to cheat is astonishingly high. It's a pandemic problem. And the country is wide awake to it now. Every time this happens, someone says, "Ah, the loss of innocence." Who is innocent?

Apple reportedly prepping 4.8-inch iPhone for June debut

@Jon It's an interesting point. I think we're getting back to the point Steve Jobs made when he rejected the idea of a video iPod - no one wants to watch movies on that tiny screen. Oh, people thought they did. But they didn't. That's why when the touch came out, customers dropped the scrollwheel iPod like a small pox blanket.

With the iPod touch and the iPhone, Apple is stuck between the proper physical size of a phone (which the iPhone 4 was) and the proper physical size of a portable video player (arguably, where the iPad mini is). I think the obviously resolution to the problem is an iPad mini with a bluetooth headset. But Apple will need to do something special so they can sell it as something new and interesting. It's just not Apple's style to say "Here's the iPad mini you know and love, we threw in a cellular chip and a bluetooth headset, now go write glowing reviews, slaves!"

Aviation: American Airlines Unveils New Livery on Boeing 777-300ER

Business

?American Airlines has unveiled a new logo and new livery on the already delivered Flagship Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, which will take to the skies on 31 January 2013. Which raises an interesting question: will pilots threaten to go on strike the way they did the last time American introduced a new logo and livery?

It's been a while since American Airlines last revamped its look ? about 30 years, if I remember correctly. That's when the airline switched from its blue and orange against a silver exterior to a red, white, and blue colour scheme. The airline's signature polished metal exterior, however, was maintained.

Pilots Threaten to Strike

?

Pilots, however, were outraged that the airline's symbol, an eagle, had been dropped from the logo and threatened to go on strike.

In the end, the airline agreed to add a stylized version of an eagle between the double AAs, which were to become the airline's new logo.

At first, I thought that the airline had decided once again to drop the eagle from its livery. It was nowhere to be seen on the tail of the airplane. It was only upon closer examination that I noticed a highly stylized version of an eagle toward the front of the fuselage. This time, however, the eagle looked more like an airplane than a bird.

Will pilots be happy? Only time will tell.

550 New Airplanes on Order

American Airlines plans to continue taking delivery of new planes in 2013 as part of its historic order of 550 new aircraft.? ?

"Since placing our landmark aircraft order in July of 2011, we've been building anticipation toward a moment in time when the outside of our aircraft reflects the progress we've made to modernize our airline on the inside," says Tom Horton, American's Chairman and CEO.

"While we complete the evaluation of whether a merger can build on American's strengths, we remain steadfast in each step we take to renew our airline, a step we take with great respect for our name American.? Today marks important progress in that journey as we unveil a new and updated look for the first time in more than 40 years." ?

One of the hallmarks of the American Airlines livery from the get go has been the polished metal ? rather than a painted ? aircraft exterior.

With the delivery of hundreds of new, lighter aircraft built of composite materials, however, polished metal was no longer an option. The planes had to be painted.

Silver Bird Legacy

Wanting to maintain its ?silver bird? legacy, Ameican Airlines decided on silver mica paint as a way of maintaining the look ? if not the metal. ?

"Our new logo and livery are designed to reflect the passion for progress and the soaring spirit, which is uniquely American," says Virasb Vahidi, American's Chief Commercial Officer.

"Our?core colors - red, white, and blue - have been updated to reflect a more vibrant and welcoming spirit. The new tail, with stripes flying proudly, is a bold reflection of American's origin and name. And our new flight symbol, an updated eagle, incorporates the many icons that people have come to associate with American, including the 'A' and the star." ?

Comment

I don't know about anyone else, but I always thought that the old American Airlines' livery - with those three broad stripes running the length of the fuselage - looked like an extremely elongated French flag. Why was it blue, white, and red rather than red, whte and blue? As for the new livery? Well?

Okay, the new livery most definitely does NOT look like an elongated? French flag. It DOES look more like an extremely stylized American flag than a French flag. That is for sure.

But it also seems strangely reminiscent of the tail of British Airways airliners - don't they sport the Union Jack?

Having said that, I must admit. The new livery looks pretty cool. And I'm glad they kept the silver skin!

Digital age prompting closure of base theaters

Some 250 people stand for the playing of the national anthem ahead of a showing of "Hotel Transylvania" inside the theater at South Dakota's Ellsworth Air Force Base on its last day of operation, Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013. (AP) ? Stacey Darling loves watching family movies at the Ellsworth Air Force Base theater in South Dakota because it's so much more affordable than taking her three children to the multiplex in nearby Rapid City.

Darling, whose husband is an airman, has been catching second-run films on base for about 2 1/2 years, and was there Saturday for the theater's last showing ? a screening of the animated movie "Hotel Transylvania." The movie theater is among 60 around the globe run by the Army and Air Force Exchange Service that is screening its last picture show amid the industry's conversion to digital projection.

"We always come out for the cartoons," said Darling, of Grand Forks, N.D. "We like the family movies."

Darling said she wishes she could go to the theater even more now that her husband, Senior Master Sgt. David Darling, has deployed to southwest Asia.

It's just not cost effective for the exchange service to invest the $120,000 per theater needed to convert from 35 millimeter film to the new format at the theaters that are being closed, said spokesman Judd Anstey. Sixty theaters will make the upgrade.

"At locations where customer attendance is decreased due to a preference for off-installation entertainment venues, a determination has been made that continued operation is no longer a viable option," Anstey said.

The exchange service runs department-store-style retail outlets, fast-food restaurants, barbers and similar services on military facilities.

Saturday's "Hotel Transylvania" screening at Ellsworth Air Force Base drew about 250 people, thanks in part to the theater forgoing the admission price for its farewell flick.

Teri Marino wishes Ellsworth patrons knew earlier about the closure so they could try to raise the cash needed to save the theater, which showed its first flick in 1969.

Marino, whose husband is a master sergeant living on base, brought her 9-year-old daughter to the final show and was enjoying the camaraderie between the mothers.

"When you're in the military, you're like family," said Marino, 37. "Especially when our husbands are deployed, the mothers ? us women ? stick together."

Stateside base theaters are limited to second-run movies, which typically have already spent six weeks in an off-base multiplex before. Ticket prices are lower, as is attendance. Base theaters have also been hurt by increased competition from video streaming services and DVD rental kiosks, Anstey said.

"The digital age has certainly made it easier to stay home and get content delivered directly to one's own living room," he said. "In addition, the theater business has become more competitive with multiplex and IMAX theaters in many locations adjacent to military installations.

Of the theaters making the conversion to the digital format, about 26 are in the U.S. and about 34 are overseas for a total cost of about $7.4 million, Anstey said.

Camp Zama in Japan, Spangdahlem Air Force Base in Germany, Camp Arifjan in Kuwait and Fort Hood in Texas are the first four to make the jump, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2013, Anstey said.

David Burnett, force support squadron commander for the 28th Bomb Wing at Ellsworth, said base officials are working to ensure other movie options, such as more DVD kiosks and an arrangement with Carmike Cinemas in Rapid City for a military discount.

He said the theater has been an important spot for on-base families, especially those living in the dorms.

"It gives them an outlet," Burnett said. "It gives them something to do."

Ron Reynolds, who was stationed on the base years ago, has served as the theater's projectionist for more than a decade.

He loads a reel on one of the twin projectors before briefly turning down the upstairs room's speaker to make sure the sound is at its best.

"Projectionist is one of the greatest part-time jobs you'll ever have," said Reynolds, 49. "Sadly, all good things must come to an end."

Reynolds' son, 29-year-old Tyler Murphy, remembers seeing "Titanic" at Ellsworth as a teenager.

"This is a little bit of a nostalgic type of moment," said Murphy, now a teacher at Sturgis Brown High School. "It's never going to be the same anymore."

HBT: Posey re-ups with Giants for one year

What does a 25-year-old reigning MVP get in his first year of arbitration eligibility?

Apparently $8 million, which is what Buster Posey and the Giants settled on for a one-year contract to avoid arbitration.

As a ?Super Two? player Posey has four years of arbitration eligibility rather than the usual three, so he remains under the Giants? control through 2016.

The one-year deal is mostly just a formality to avoid a hearing, but Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com writes that the two sides will probably talk about a multi-year deal at some point before spring training begins.

Why would gay people choose a church marriage?

Why would gay people choose a church marriage?

IN response to last week?s letters from Mr James Cadle and Mr Adrian Waters, I would like to point out to the two gentlemen that at this moment in time we have a monarch who still practises the Christian faith.

Marriage in a church is more than a partnership; it?s a religious undertaking both spiritual and physical between two people.

The loving couple normally, at least one, has and are practising Christians and very often supported the church financially, and taken part in services, etc. The church and its clergy have no objection to the love of one man to another as long as it is not physical.

All people have freedom of choice. Why would gay people want to choose a church? They can marry in civil partnership on a boat, tent, hall, mansion house, on the beach.

On Christianity dictating the laws in the country it?s been done for at least 1,700 years. Well done the Rev Peter Simpson, bless you.
