Family tragedy becomes public nightmare when death video hits Twitter

19 hrs.

By the time police asked Internet users to remove graphic photos of a man decapitated after he jumped in front of a train, it was too late for the dead man's son. He had already seen the grisly images ? recorded by teenagers?just after the incident occurred ? when they went viral on Twitter.

You can hear the teens in the background of the shaky cellphone video, recorded Wednesday afternoon in the Netherlands, calling to each other, their adolescent voices tweaked with shock, excitement. "Here. Here is the body. Here he is," one boy shouts in Dutch. Another points to the man's severed head, a few feet away. No one is laughing.?

At least 70 students?at a nearby school ??in the?Kennemerland area of?Haarlem ??witnessed the accident or immediate aftermath, reports?Ijmuider Courant, a Netherlands news site. School officials swung into action. Within 10 minutes of the incident,?administrators?guided students away from the station and back to the school. There, counselors and members of the?Kennemerland police department spent the afternoon talking to kids and later, their parents, about what they had seen.

Yet at the same time that the school was trying to mitigate the psychological damage of the incident, a video of it was being shared among students and?making its way out onto the Internet, by way of Twitter.

This is the video the?dead man's son had already seen when?Kennemerland?police broke the news to the family. It was then that son connected the two, and realized the video was of his father.?

When the police department found out about the video, the department took to Twitter and asked the public to stop sharing the video. In Dutch, the police?asked, "Anyone who has shared pictures of the?Driehuis?train victim, remove them immediately. It is disrespectful and goes too far!"

It's a good-faith plea, made by a police department savvy in the ways of the Internet, enough to know it was already too late. It was too late 15 minutes after the video first hit Twitter, when the teenage boy who first sent it out into cyberspace deleted his original tweet. It had already been?retweeted countless times. And that is the lesson that Evy Elschot, spokesperson for the Kennemerland police department, hopes people will take away from this incident, instead of the gory details.

"The boy didn't understand the impact of what he had done," Elschot told msnbc.com in a telephone interview. Identifying him only as a teenager between the ages of 14 and 16, Elschot described him choking on tears and shaking with panic when confronted by police. "The boy said he wished he didn't do it, that he could take it back, but of course he couldn't," she said.

The boy tweeted (in Dutch), "I hate myself for what I've done," according to news site RTL.?

Elschot told msnbc.com she regrets the story receiving national attention, resulting in?the inevitable spread of a video that causes pain to a family already suffering. (Msnbc.com will not link to the video.) To protect the family's privacy, she would not share the age of the son who saw his father in the video.?

According to?Elschot, it was a very difficult decision to ask people via Twitter to delete the video.

The Kennemerland police department is very active on Twitter, using the official account to communicate with the public on such things as traffic delays, especially crowded areas at festivals, as well as finding witnesses to crimes and fielding complaints (and compliments) from the public. But by using Twitter to discuss a suicide, the Kennemerland police department went against what Elschot describes as Holland's "gentleman's agreement" to not publicize details about suicides.

Elschot said that it's in consideration for families whose?members?commit suicide,?but this practice also abides by the World Health Organization's recommendations for avoiding suicide contagion ? a phenomenon which affects those already at risk. Train suicides account for 4 to 10 percent of suicides in the Netherlands, the Journal of Affective Disorders reported in 2010.??Such a video going viral could spread contagion as well.

Elschot agrees that there's an important discussion to be had, but not about this family's tragedy.

"This really is about young people and how the world is different," she said. "When I was a kid, I might say some things in my small town without thinking, but we only had the telephone. Someone else might read your letter, and there is embarrassment for awhile, but not the oil spread of information we now have on the Internet. Kids need to understand that and their parents need to tell them."

The American Library Association website offers a variety of resources to help parents and kids navigate the Internet safely and responsibly. ?

If you are thinking about harming yourself or attempting suicide, tell someone who can help right away:

  • Call your doctor?s office.
  • Call 911 for emergency services.
  • Go to the nearest hospital emergency room.
  • Visit the website or call the toll-free, 24-hour hotline of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at?1-800-273-TALK (1-800-273-8255)?to be connected to a trained counselor at a suicide crisis center nearest you.

Ask a family member or friend to help you make these calls or take you to the hospital.

So Called Time Management -Back to the Future!

They say that time is something that you can never find once it is lost! We?ve all felt frustrated over time wasted or time that has slipped by too quickly.

?Time Management? is a very deceptive term. Have you ever felt frustrated about running around in circles getting lots done but feeling like you haven?t accomplished anything worthwhile? It?s the dilemma between what is ?urgent? and what is ?important?. Often the demands put on our energy and time which are urgent are not really important; and unfortunately, the things that are really important are usually not urgent. We often get the feeling that when we?re caught up on things and have time, we will finally be able to get to the things that are really important to us. Well, I have discovered that ?someday? doesn?t exist and it will always remain a figment of your imagination unless you book it!

Now, this might all get you thinking that you have to ?prioritize? the things that take up your time and the things you really want to be doing. This is all really good, but it goes a whole lot deeper than this!

You need to take a good, hard look at your attitudes about time and at your core values and goals. This might be a good journaling opportunity! Stop the vicious cycle and decide if all the stuff you?re trying to get done is really in harmony with your deep down values and goals. Think way back to when you dreamed about the future. Now that you are probably living in that ?future? is it all that you had hoped it would be? Is there something missing? Have you allowed ?urgent? matters to rob you of what means the most to you? Are those urgent things really important or can you possibly minimize or eliminate some of them so that you can steer your life in the direction of your deepest values and goals?

Think about what you had hoped your future was going to be like. Maybe you had pictured plenty of quality time with the kids, a strong and loving family, a certain ministry you had wanted to pursue, a special project, painting beautiful pictures, writing a great novel, spending more time with nature, or whatever it is for you. Allow yourself to dream! What are the things that are taking up your time and stopping you from having and doing all of those things?

Now, not ?someday? is the time to put most important things first. I ask again, ?Do those things you?re busy doing all really need to be done?? You see, real time management isn?t about becoming more efficient by having more sophisticated schedules or getting better at multitasking. It isn?t about prioritizing and cramming more accomplishments into a day.

Find out first if you are doing the things you really need to be doing in order to live out your core values and deep down goals and accomplish those things which are most important to you. Then focus on doing those most important things well!

Holistic Entrepreneur Spotlight: Jane Manthorpe | Global ...

Before I found the GAHP membership and then the GAHP Certification program I was a wee bit lost in the woods on how to truly connect with my authentic self. I am going through a big transformation in my life as I leave my career of 27 years as a Company Accountant and Consultant in the corporate world and breaking out to follow my dream of creating and designing my own successful business as a Holistic Coach and Health and Fitness Mentor (specializing in raw food nutrition, body fitness via Chi Running and Walking and Spiritual Coaching). I felt spiritually connected in a way but knew I could go deeper but did not know how, there was something missing on how to really connect and stay connected. I was seeking guidance and was longing to know more on how to connect with my intuition and spiritual self for finding answers and help me make some tough decisions in my life.
?
Since being part of the GAHP Holistic Coaching Certification program to become a Holistic Coach, I have experienced and several amazing breakthroughs of connecting with my authentic self receiving such clear clarity of guidance that has guided me to make some fairly big decisions. Also, breakaway from some energy blocks which were affecting my clarity of thought and preventing me from progressing in some areas of my journey with my business creation and direction. I have made such great headway and made some fantastic leaps of success with both my business and my personal life.

I now know how to connect with my intuition and know what messages are coming from my true self and what are coming from my conditioned self. I also have special tools I can use to really get connected with my spirit and ways to clear sabotaging negative thoughts and actions so I can keep on my path of purpose.

The GAHP Certification training was very enlightening and was a mixture of live training at the start of program where we were all invited to attend a live training to connect and experience wonderful coaching from Shelley Riutta who shared some amazing spiritual techniques and methods to connect with our guidance within.

I experienced a tremendous breakthrough as I connected with my mum who died recently. I knew she was with me in spirit and learned in such a gentle way how to connect with her and came away from the live training feeling such joy and connect with others who shared my journey. The high vibration of the live event was so much I felt it even though I was connected to the live event via online from New Zealand it was an experience of joy, laughter and great breakthroughs as we all journeyed to connect with our authentic selves and share our journeys.

I would totally recommend the GAHP Holistic Certification program to anyone wishing to know more about connecting and finding their true authentic self. You will learn how to connect with them to receive the guidance that if you allow it and take action will guide you to a life full of joy and contentment.

SNR Denton - Victory for Aircraft Lessors in ACG v. Olympic

The recent ACG v. Olympic Airlines [2012] EWHC 1070 case reinforces the near-universal deal in aircraft leases. Alexander Hewitt considers two aspects of the case that are particularly useful to lessors.

It is fundamental to an aircraft lease that:

  • the lessee takes the aircraft as is, where is;
  • the lessor gives no assurance about the aircraft?s condition; and
  • once the lessee accepts delivery of the aircraft, it cannot later reject it, but must pay all amounts expressed to be due from it ?come hell or high water?.

The ACG lease was unusual in that ACG promised Olympic the aircraft would be delivered airworthy and fit for immediate commercial service. After delivery, the aircraft turned out to have been neither. At a trial of the resulting dispute, the judge:

  • ruled the pre-delivery acceptance certificate Olympic had signed stopped it from raising pre-delivery defects in the aircraft (discovered post-delivery) against ACG?s claim for sums due under the lease; and
  • commented on the drafting of the lease?s conclusive evidence clause.

Acceptance Certificate and Conclusive Evidence Clause

At trial, ACG?s main arguments were:

  • when Olympic signed a pre-delivery acceptance certificate, which ACG relied on in accepting re-delivery of the aircraft under a previous lease, this created an estoppel by representation preventing Olympic from relying on the pre-existing defects in the aircraft that emerged after delivery; and
  • once Olympic took delivery, a conclusive evidence clause in the lease created a contractual estoppel preventing Olympic from relying on those defects.

ACG won on the acceptance certificate/estoppel by representation argument. It lost on conclusive evidence/contractual estoppel ? but only because the judge ruled the conclusive evidence clause was unclear.

Regarding estoppel by representation, ACG convinced the judge:

  • ACG had relied on Olympic?s clear and unequivocal statement in the acceptance certificate that the aircraft was in the condition the lease required; and
  • in reliance on that statement, ACG had given up rights to require the previous lessee to put the aircraft in that condition before re-delivery.

Finance Leases and Sale and Leaseback Transactions

In a cross-border finance lease or sale and leaseback transaction, it is unlikely the lessor will agree to any express term or representation regarding the aircraft?s condition. So the need to argue the acceptance certificate creates an estoppel should not arise ? except in any domestic aircraft lease to which the Unfair Contract Terms Act applies.

However, should a lessor need to rely on the acceptance certificate to prevent the lessee from claiming the aircraft was defective at delivery, it would need to show it:

  • relied on the lessee?s representation in the certificate that the aircraft was in the condition the lease required ? which should usually be possible; and
  • acted to its detriment in relying on that statement.

As to detriment, the lessor should usually be able to show its detriment was giving up its right:

  • in a finance lease, not to accept the aircraft from the manufacturer; and
  • in a sale and leaseback, not to accept the aircraft from the lessee.

Contractual Estoppel

Contractual estoppel is a recent development. Broadly, it allows parties to agree certain things are to be treated as true under their contract. In JP Morgan v. Springwell [2010] EWCA Civ 1221, the Court of Appeal ruled a contract can validly provide that something shall be treated as true between its parties even if they know it is false ? unless some rule of public policy provides otherwise.

It will be very rare that a rule of public policy will prevent sophisticated parties to a cross-border aircraft lease from agreeing that, once it has accepted the aircraft, the lessee cannot later claim the aircraft was defective. In part, this will be because:

  • even after pre-delivery inspections by experts, neither party will be certain the aircraft is in any given condition; and
  • overall the lease will indicate the parties have freely decided for good commercial reasons that, once it has accepted the aircraft, the lessee takes all risks of the aircraft not being in any particular condition.

In ACG, the judge accepted the parties could have agreed an enforceable contractual estoppel on these issues. The only reason they failed to do so was that the conclusive evidence clause was too general.

The little word that causes big panic? - DM Accounting Services

Today I?m going to talk about something NO ONE wants to discuss. It?s a word that strikes fear and panic into the heart of every businessperson. Just the mere thought of this ?A? word can bring tears to a grown man?s eyes.

Yes, we?re talking about an IRS Audits.

Do you know that the surest way to get audited if you own a business is to NOT pay yourself a salary? That?s right, the number one risk for S-corporations to get audited is to file your taxes without being compensated for your work.

The thing is that the IRS knows few people work for free, so it figures you?re getting paid one way or another and you need to be taxed on that income.

Not paying yourself a salary is a red flag because one major the agency makes money is by collecting payroll taxes. So if you don?t pay yourself, the IRS doesn?t get paid.

Bottom line, the penalty for failing to pay payroll taxes is 100% of the taxes owed, plus interest and penalties!

What if you?re a new business, or you?re losing money? Even so, you should still pay yourself. According to the IRS, your salary doesn?t have to be a lot, it just has to be ?reasonable?.

So what exactly does reasonable mean? Here are some guidelines.
Zero salary isn?t considered ?reasonable? so whatever you do, don?t pay yourself nothing.
Below minimum wage isn?t reasonable either.
Consider what you would accept for a similar position at another company. You wouldn?t accept an offer of $5,000 to be the CEO of a company, the IRS reasons, why should your company be any different?
One way to figure out a reasonable wage is to tally the number of hours you work for your business, your knowledge and skills, then base your salary on the amount of time you spend working.
By the way, not only must you pay yourself a salary, you must also have a record of your payments.

At DM Accounting we can help you pay yourself in a way that minimizes taxes and maximizes deductions. We can set up small weekly or monthly disbursements that won?t break the bank, plus we monitor at ALL times to ensure there?s enough cash flow to support your salary. If we need to skip a payment or two, that?s not a big deal.

So pay yourself a salary not only to avoid the payroll tax penalty and an audit, but also because you?re worth it!

Wishing you much success and $$$!!

How SEO Helps Small Business - One Way Links Building

Finding affordable SEO services for your small business is paramount to achieving success in this modern world. Just about everything and everyone is on the internet so keeping up with that game is the only way to get a shot at making the big time. If you are truly committed to promoting and expanding your business endeavor, find a company that will work with you closely to develop exactly the kind of online marketing presence you want and need.

It is no new thing for businesspeople to go to marketing experts to help them with promotion. In fact, it?s been a practice for at least the past two hundred years. Of course, in the past one hundred years it has exploded as a field. An SEO company is a specialized kind of marketing professional that can create the best ad strategy for your business on this brand new medium, the internet.

Many small business owners feel that if they can do the work themselves, they should. Unfortunately, most of these people don?t have the skills or knowledge to successfully carry out an effective online marketing campaign or strategy. Just because everyone and their brother is now able to through together a website doesn?t mean that option is best from a business standpoint.

Often, that financial investment in a marketing expert is what it takes to push a business into the spotlight. If you delegate the marketing jobs of your business career to another professional, you can focus your own efforts on the actual business. Many small business owners take on too much responsibility or work themselves and it makes them unable to guide the business from a big picture standpoint.

The ways an SEO company can guide your online presence and promotion are many. Lots of small business owners find that social networking sites are key to getting the word out. SEO companies can help you establish a solid and engaging online presence on all those social websites like Facebook, Linked In, Four Square and more.

SEO in particular is a skill that helps internet users searching the web with a search engine find your business website rather than someone else?s. This promotion strategy is all about finding the most relevant keywords for your business that are also popular search terms.

By harnessing the power of search engines, search engine optimization companies help you bring in a wider audience than ever before. Online browsers go to search engines to get their questions answered and to find the resources they seek. If your website and online presence pops up as the leading result when customers search your field, you can imagine the amount of traffic you?ll be pulling in!

Any small business owner knows the difficulty of balancing all the tasks that need to be done. Save yourself the hassle of trying your hand at web design and hire an affordable SEO services company. Not only will they do the work for you, they will create effective and compelling promotions that will boost your customer base and expand your business..

Biodegradable artery graft will enhance bypass surgeries

ScienceDaily (June 24, 2012) ? With the University of Pittsburgh's development of a cell-free, biodegradable artery graft comes a potentially transformative change in coronary artery bypass surgeries: Within 90 days after surgery, the patient will have a regenerated artery with no trace of synthetic graft materials left in the body.

Research published online June 24 in Nature Medicine highlights work led by principal investigator Yadong Wang, a professor in Pitt's Swanson School of Engineering and School of Medicine's Department of Surgery, who designed grafts that fully harness the body's regenerative capacity. This new approach is a philosophical shift from the predominant cell-centered approaches in tissue engineering of blood vessels.

"The host site, the artery in this case, is an excellent source of cells and provides a very efficient growth environment," said Wang. "This is what inspired us to skip the cell culture altogether and create these cell-free synthetic grafts."

Wang and fellow researchers, Wei Wu, a former Pitt postdoctoral associate (now a postdoctoral associate at Yale University), and Robert Allen, a PhD student in bioengineering, designed the graft with three properties in mind. First, they chose a graft material -- an elastic polymer called PGS -- that is resorbed quickly by the body. Then, they examined graft porosity and selected parameters that allow immediate cell infiltration. Wang's team borrowed a procedure developed by another team of Pitt researchers -- David Vorp, professor of bioengineering and surgery, and William R. Wagner, interim director of the University's McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine and a Pitt professor of surgery, bioengineering, and chemical engineering -- wrapping the vascular graft with a fibrous sheath to trap the cells. Finally, Wang and his fellow researchers wanted a coating for the grafts that would reduces blood clotting and bind many growth factors, so they used heparin, a molecule that does just that.

"The results were porous grafts that are suturable," said Wang. "And the rapid remodeling of the grafts led to strong and compliant new arteries. The extent of the changes in the grafts that occurred in just 90 days was remarkable."

Wang and his colleagues made grafts as small as 1 mm in diameter and monitored the graft's transformation in vivo for three months. Because the graft was highly porous, cells were easily able to penetrate the graft wall, and mononuclear cells occupied many of the pores within three days. Within 14 days, smooth muscle cells -- an important blood vessel builder -- appeared. At 28 days, cells were distributed more evenly throughout the graft. At 90 days, most inflammatory cells were gone, which correlated with the disappearance of the graft materials. The artery was regenerated in situ and pulsed in sync with the host. Furthermore, the composition and properties of the new arteries are nearly the same as native arteries.

"This report is the first that shows a nearly complete transformation of a synthetic plastic tube to a new host artery with excellent integration within three months," said Wang. "Most likely, the amount of time it takes to regenerate an artery can be further shortened as we refine the system."

Current approaches toward tissue-engineered arteries require a long production cycle because of the required cell culture steps. The newly developed graft is made in a few days, stores in a dry pouch at ambient temperature, and is readily available off the shelf. The ease of use and storage are similar to the conventional Dacron? grafts.

Hoodies, bare midriffs out for Wimbledon members

(AP) ? Wimbledon's dress code for members has a new look this year.

There's no change in the standards, with the tournament still banning hoodies, zipper jackets, jeans, flip-flops, strapless tops, shorts and bare midriffs. But for the first time, the dress code was included in a glossy pamphlet mailed to members of the All England Club.

The guidelines were accompanied by photos of a male and female model.

Acceptable dress for gentlemen means a suit or tailored jacket, shirt, tie, trousers and dress shoes. "Ladies are expected to dress to a similar standard," the brochure says.

Boys under 11 aren't required to wear a jacket or tie. The dress standards will be strictly enforced, and the guidelines are included "to avoid any embarrassment," the pamphlet says.

Everything for the Kayaker Available Online

These days, people are far more likely to get into extreme sports than ever before. When they find a sport that excites them, or leads them into situations that are unusual, they normally look for the correct gear to help them enjoy the sport but in relative safety. To this end, boats, or anything to do with water craft, are becoming more popular so things like kayak anchors and kayak leashes are just some of the goodies on sale for these avid and adventurous sportsmen and women.

The important thing to note, when out on these rather flimsy looking water craft, is that the user will eventually want to stop for a while. To ensure that he does not drift away from the spot he has chosen, he will have to fasten the craft either to the river bank, or on the spot where he is if on the open sea. This is done by way of this kind of equipment and the ties that are also sold will ensure that he does not lose any of the equipment on board either.

Some people like to do sea or river fishing when they are out in this kind of craft so they will have bits and pieces, like fishing rods and nets, life jackets and other kinds of paraphernalia which must be attached if it is not to float off in rough weather conditions. These ties come in many forms and lengths so it is up to the individual what they want. Some of the ties will come with a plastic, cling film type covering to stop the water from having a corrosive effect on the rope used. On the ends, the fittings should be on a noncorrosive metal so that it will last for a number of years even though it may be wet for most of the time.

Passes too, are renowned for floating off when we least expect them to so having these attached, without interfering with the stroke of the user, is important if we are not to spend time chasing after them or being left stranded somewhere out on the water. Some people will actually tie themselves to the boat too in case they overturn. They will not want the craft to get away but they will also not want to be put in a dangerous position so this has to be thought about carefully before opting to do this.

Indeed, anyone who is into this kind of sport will certainly have to be aware of the danger particularly if they go out alone. If this is what they want to do, they must inform others of where they will be, how long they will be there and when they are expecting to return. This, as well as all the safety gear that is available today, should see them being able to enjoy the sport without risking their lives along the way. It makes good sense to always be aware of what can go wrong, and then working out how to avoid this situation.

Coach of the Year: Olson leaves behind a long list of successes

There is no shortage of successful programs in the Class 4A Narrows League.

Despite that, South Kitsap's tennis team featured both the boys (Dakota Giddings) and girls (Kailyn Skjonsby) league champions. Both also qualified for state.

For those reasons, Todd Olson is the Port Orchard Independent's Coach of the Year.

Skjonsby credits Olson for much of her success.

"He's meant everything to me," she said. "I began taking lessons from him when I was 9 years old."

When Olson took over the school's girls program a decade ago, he said he had about 20 students try out. A few years later, that number reached 90. Skjonsby said that is because Olson makes the sport fun while expecting them to work hard at the same time.

"He inspires everyone to improve," she said.

Olson said he had to generate interest in the program to build a winner.

"Just having those numbers in a sport like tennis where it is not offered at the junior high is the only way to build a successful program," he said.

That is part of the legacy he will leave. Olson told his team during a June 11 meeting that he will not return next season.

"I'm taking a little bit of a break," said Olson, whose wife, Heather, expects their second child in November. "Our family is growing, so there's no way I would have time to continue to coach."

He said he would consider coaching the Wolves again later when his children ? Olson and his wife also have a 2-year-old son ? are older.

Olson, who had invasive melanoma a few years ago, said his reason for stepping down solely was based on spending more time with his family.

"All my health is really good," said Olson, adding that he always has tried to stay upbeat. "Right now it is in remission and hopefully it stays that way."

Eric Bergeson, a longtime soccer coach for the Wolves who also was Olson's predecessor, filled in for him during most of that season.

"He was there for me," Olson said. "Hopefully he knows I would reciprocate."

Bergeson has helped coordinate several community-service programs at the school, including "Nothing But Nets," which provides insecticide treated mosquito bed nets to communities in Africa to combat the spread of malaria. Olson's tennis teams have been active in that and other charity events, including gathering 300 food items for donation within 16 hours.

"It's cool that our team can be this powerful," Olson said. "There's not many teams that do community-service projects."

In addition to being involved, his teams regularly had a presence at state. The highlight might have been Stephanie Davison, who won 4A state singles titles in 2004-05 before continuing onto the University of Texas. But Olson also featured several other league championships and state performers.

"The success of our program kind of hit me when I had two Rubbermaid tubs filled with trophies," he said.

Olson, who will continue to work with some players during the offseason, said he was grateful for the effort his players put in to develop the program. During his first season, Olson said some players who comment on how they won their match even though the team lost.

"They didn't understand when I took over the girls program that there was a team concept," he said.

That was a mentality Olson was raised with in sports. As a high-school student in Wyoming, Olson was a pitcher and a third baseman. He thought he would follow in the footsteps of his older sister, Cassie, who was a volleyball player at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. But similar to many baseball players, Olson only was offered a partial scholarship. When Montana State University Billings offered him a full scholarship to play tennis, Olson said it was a "no-brainer."

He later met his wife, who is from Chehalis, and also played tennis for the Yellowjackets. After graduating, the couple decided to settle in the Puget Sound region. Before he came to South, Olson was a tennis instructor at the Balley's fitness clubs in Olympia and Tacoma. He coached some future Wolves in that position when they were in elementary school.

Olson has continued forging relationships with students throughout his tenure, which he said will be the most difficult aspect of not coaching next year. But he said he has no regrets.

"It was a family decision," he said, "and it wasn't tough for me to step away for my family."

Screen Grabs: Continuum scrubs the Acer off an Iconia W500

TV producers always think they can sneak a fast one by us and our eagle-eyed readers. Little do they realize that together we are a near unstoppable force, capable of spotting, identifying and mocking nearly every use (and misuse) of tech on TV. A tipster caught this un-branded tablet on a recent episode of Continuum and, after a little bit of sleuthing, we were able to identify it as the Iconia Tab W500. Without the company's branding it was a little tough to pick out exactly what this slate was, but the off-center placement of the Windows logo and unique looking webcam gave its identity away. Sorry Canadian television, you'll have to try harder to sneak a device by us.

[Thanks, Reece]

Why your diet tanks as the day wears on

??It's the same old story: You start out your day with the best of eating intentions but, by lunchtime, that candy bar's starting to sound really good. And dinner? Well, let's just say the pizza delivery guy asked you to come to his wedding.

What's Behind People Forgetting Names?

You're at a party and you're introduced to someone new. The two of you start talking, and in the midst of conversation, you get distracted. You start to think about what you want for dinner, or what your plans are for the weekend. Then, you realize you have completely blanked on your acquaintance's name.

Sound familiar?

Now, blaming it on having a bad memory may no longer be a valid excuse.

According to Richard Harris, a professor of psychology at Kansas State University, it's not your brain's ability that dictates how well you remember people's names, but how motivated you are to learn them.

"Just about everybody has a good memory for something because people are interested in different things," said Harris. "But not everybody is motivated to work very hard at the same things."

"A lot of people have the idea that remembering names of people is just hard and so they haven't really worked at it very much," he said. "I think it's something that is not terribly hard but it does require a bit of working at.

"It doesn't just come if you don't work at it at all."

As a professor, Harris said he tries to memorize the names of each of his approximately 50 students in the first few weeks of the semester.

As a trick to remember, he'll call out the names of everyone in class for the first week. While it may seem like a waste of time, he tells his students it's the only way he'll learn their names.

"When I call the names, I go through and try to think about the names, and what is distinctive about this person," he said. "And I'll learn a few names each time. I find it doesn't take a lot of work doing that."

"People are often kind of impressed at that," Harris said. "I tell them, 'It really isn't that hard, I haven't done anything that you couldn't do.'"

Harris said remembering names comes not only from motivation, but also from confidence.

"Some people don't have much confidence in their own memories or own social skills, they say 'I'm not good with people, I'm not good with learning names.' It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy."

Harris suggests using a person's name in conversation to help remember.

"People are embarrassed often; they think they can't ask again," said Harris.

But thanks to Harris, people may now have to admit it's because they weren't paying close enough attention.
