Dartmouth College worker hurt after fall from window

HANOVER ? A Dartmouth College employee was injured Saturday when he fell from a two-story fraternity house window while allegedly using illicit drugs, police said Monday.

Police responded to Sigma Nu fraternity shortly before 6 p.m. Saturday after the 21-year-old man exited a second-floor window at the fraternity and fell to the ground. He was taken to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center for the injuries he sustained.

Police did not release his name, but said he is an employee of the college and that he and two other men who were allegedly using LSD and marijuana in the room on the premises prior to the fall are under investigation.

One of the men, a 20-year-old not affiliated with the college, was found by police on the property of another fraternity and taken to Dartmouth-Hitchcock for treatment of symptoms associated with the drug use, police said.

Police also found the third man, a 22-year-old, at another fraternity. Police determined he did not need medical attention.

Police said the 22-year-old is a 2013 graduate of Dartmouth College, who is renting a room on the second floor of the Sigma Nu fraternity.

?None of the males were otherwise affiliated with the Sigma Nu fraternity,? police said.

Police conducted multiple interviews and executed eight search warrants during the Saturday evening investigation.

?Further investigation is pending. No charges have been filed to date,? police said.

Samsung Galaxy S4 vs. Galaxy S3: Is the Galaxy S4 Worth the Extra $100?

The Samsung Galaxy S4. (Photo : Samsung)

Samsung's new Galaxy S4 may be all the rage, but budget-minded consumers would do well to not forget about Samsung's 2012 flagship, the Galaxy S3. The smartphone can be found for half the price as the Galaxy S4, so the question arises, is the Galaxy S4 worth the extra money? To answer that question, let's take a look at the smartphones' specs.

Like Us on Facebook

(For the purpose of the specs comparison below, we will be looking at the standard American variants, as Samsung has a number of international models that sport different processors)

Make no mistake, the Galaxy S4 is powerful. The smartphone is equipped with a 5-inch 1080p HD Super AMOLED display pushing out 441 pixels per inch (ppi), a 1.9GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor, 2GB RAM, a 13-megapixel rear shooter, and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. Both the cameras can record in 1080p. The stock battery holds a capacity of 2,600mAh, and the Galaxy S4 runs Android 4.2.2 right out of the box.

The Galaxy S3, however, is no slouch either. The Galaxy S3, released last year, comes with a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED screen that can display 306 ppi. Underneath the hood lies a dual-core Snapdragon processor, 2GB RAM, an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera, and a 1.9-megapixel front camera. While the rear camera can shoot video in 1080p, the front one can only take video in 720p. The Galaxy S3's battery is smaller, at 2,100mAh, and it comes with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean onboard. An update to Android 4.2.2 seems to be in limbo, but when it finally does release, it will bring a number of Galaxy S4 features such as gesture controls over to the Galaxy S3.

Both phones support LTE and additional storage through a micro SD slot, and both phones, even the Galaxy S3, will be able to run most apps without a hitch. In fact, both phones exude a similar look and feel, and while the Galaxy S4 is undoubtedly the better of the two, a quick trip to a local retail store can save buyers $100. Given the longevity of these powerful handsets, and despite the Galaxy S3's still-impressive specs, those who want the latest and greatest will have to shell out the extra money for the Galaxy S4, which will seem far more modern against newer rivals like the HTC One or the Sony Xperia Z, all of which have 1080p displays as well.

Let us know which one of the two smartphones you prefer, and why, in the comments sectino below.?

Black sesame noodle salad

Top soba noodles with sesame paste and your protein of choice for a simple summer lunch.

Soba, made from buckwheat flour, is prettily packed in bundles about 8 to a package. Note that many sobas are also made with wheat flour so it isn?t a gluten-free food. Juwari, the finest ? and usually most expensive ? soba is made entirely of buckwheat, but please, please read the labels especially if you are allergic or intolerant to wheat!

This is turning out to be my go-to recipe for a simple summer lunch. It?s done in 15 minutes, even less if you make the sesame paste ahead and refrigerate. Top the noodles with whatever you have on hand ? poached chicken, pan-fried tofu, pickles, your options are only limited to what you have in your fridge!

Black Sesame Noodles

Adapted from?101cookbooks.com

Makes: 4 servings

Time: 15 minutes

1/2 cup toasted black sesame seeds

2-1/2 tablespoons rice vinegar

1-1/2 tablespoons soy sauce

1 tablespoon sesame oil

1-1/2 teaspoon mirin or dry sherry

1 tablespoon sugar

Pinch of chili pepper flakes or cayenne

12 ounces soba (3 bundles)

1 small cucumber, shredded

1 small carrot, shredded

1. Grind the sesame seeds with a mortar and pestle, or in a small food processor, until it resembles coarse black sand.

2. Stir in the rice vinegar, soy sauce, sesame oil, mirin, sugar, and chili flakes and mix until a smooth paste forms. Taste and adjust accordingly.

3. Cook the soba according to package directions, reserving 1/3 cup of the cooking water. Rinse the noodles with cold water and drain.

4. Thin the sesame paste with the cooking water and toss with the noodles. Garnish with cucumber and carrot and slurp up! This dish is tasty eaten at room temperature or chilled first.

Mickelson wins Scottish Open after playoff

INVERNESS, Scotland (AP) ? Phil Mickelson doffed his cap to an adoring and applauding crowd in the grandstands overlooking the 18th green at the Scottish Open, and walked to the side of the putting surface to hug his wife and three children.

It was a similar scene 20 minutes later ? this time with Mickelson having seized his second chance to secure a first victory in Europe in 20 years.

Mickelson beat Branden Grace in a playoff Sunday after putting himself, his family and his growing legion of Scottish fans through a tense finale on a wild final day on the Castle Stuart links.

"Nobody likes a movie that is predictable," said Mickelson, who appears to be as popular in the Highlands as he is back in California. "You always want to have a little bit of suspense."

After overcoming a terrible start to his last round and wiping out a five-shot deficit to overnight leader Henrik Stenson, Mickelson only needed two putts for par on the 72nd hole to complete the perfect preparation for next week's British Open at Muirfield.

From the fringe, 15 feet out, his putt raced past the hole and his return effort from 5 feet clipped the edge of the cup and stayed out. That meant a new duel with Grace, who shot a 69 like Mickelson in the final round to finish at 17-under 271.

Before heading back up the par-5 18th, Lefty embraced his family, who had been waiting nearby hoping to celebrate with him.

"I was just getting a little luck from them. And refocusing after making a mistake like that," Mickelson said.

It was skill rather than luck that eventually decided things in his favor.

With Grace landing his third shot in the playoff 25 feet away, Mickelson seized his chance by producing a pitch from 45 yards with a 64-degree wedge that spanned back to within a foot of the pin.

After days of links-style bump and runs, it was the kind of chip shot he produces regularly on the PGA Tour that sealed the win.

After Mickelson tapped in, his South African opponent's putt slid by and the celebrations could really begin for the Mickelson clan.

"I almost let it slip away, but to come out on top feels terrific," said Mickelson, who will tee off at Muirfield next week as No. 5 in the world and $740,000 richer.

"I don't think there's a better way to get ready for a major championship or an Open championship than playing the week before, playing well the week before and getting into contention. And coming out on top just gives me more confidence."

This was his 48th professional victory worldwide, four of which have come in the majors. However, he has never raised the claret jug.

Mickelson and Grace finished on 17-under 271 after overhauling Stenson, who bogeyed three of his last six holes for a tie for third with unheralded Dane J.B. Hansen on 15 under.

Rebounding well from his near miss at last month's U.S. Open and then his missed cut at the Greenbrier Classic last week, Mickelson had to dig deep to earn his first win on European soil since capturing the Tournoi Perrier Paris on the European Challenge Tour in 1993.

When he drove into the rough on the first hole, topped his second shot and then three-putted, he dropped four strokes behind Stenson, who started in a manner befitting his nickname "The Iceman" in the toughest conditions of the week.

After three calm and sunny days, the wind picked up off the Moray Firth coastline and turned a beautiful course into a beast. Only five players shot lower than 70 on Sunday.

Mickelson was in more trouble when his chip from just off the third green came up short and rolled back down the hill to his feet. He was then five shots off the leader.

"In conditions like these, there are going to be mistakes," Mickelson said. "There isn't a perfect round in these conditions."

Urged on by a Scottish crowd that has really taken to the American ? a long-time supporter of this tournament and a lover of Scotland and its courses ? he birdied the next three holes and then picked up shots at Nos. 11, 12, 14 and 16 to take the sole lead, after briefly sharing it with Stenson and Hansen.

With the two Scandinavians dropping shots coming home, Grace became Mickelson's closest challenger and his illustrious rival handed him a reprieve to take the event beyond 72 holes.

"I was so mad at myself after mentally losing my focus," Mickelson said.

They were forced to wait to tee off again with organizers having removed the tee markers on the 18th, clearly confident Mickelson would finish the job the first time around.

Mickelson held his nerve in the playoff, though, with his approach shot bringing roars of approval from fans.

"This tournament, it's special to me ... to play well at the Home of Golf really means a lot to me," he said.

Hansen, who had missed the cut in 12 of his 17 previous tournaments in his rookie season, had threatened to produce one of the most remarkable comeback wins.

He found the bushes twice on the second fairway ? forcing him to take two penalty drops ? and then chipped short of the green with his sixth to wind up with a quadruple-bogey nine.

No one has ever won on the European Tour after making that score in his final round and he couldn't alter that stat, despite reeling off seven birdies on his next eight holes to briefly take the lead.

Like Stenson, he faded away in the home stretch.

DIVOTS: Martin Laird shot 68 for the lowest round of the day, finishing in a tie for fifth and as the highest-placed Scot. ... Mickelson's win allowed Steve Stallings of the United States to get into the British Open as an alternate.

Woman gored by bull in Spain in 'very serious' condition

Stringer/Spain / Reuters

An unidentified 23-year-old Australian woman, wearing a white t-shirt, falls in between bulls after being gored by a Miura fighting bull in Spain,

By Susana Vera and Clare Kane, Reuters

PAMPLONA, Spain - A 23-year-old Australian woman gored in the chest on the final day of Spain's annual San Fermin bull-running festival was in a "very serious" condition, local authorities said on Sunday.

The woman, who was only identified by her initials J.E., was injured during the early morning run, where bulls chase people down the cobbled streets of Pamplona in northeast Spain, and immediately taken to hospital for surgery.

She suffered several fractured ribs and damage to her right lung, according to a medical report released by authorities.

The bull run is believed to date to the 13th century but is known to have continued virtually every year since 1592, when the festival was shifted from September to July. People are thought to have joined the running herd sometime in the 1800s.

The festival, which runs for one week, was made famous internationally by Ernest Hemingway's 1926 novel "The Sun Also Rises", and it attracts thousands of foreign visitors.

Three Spaniards and one American were also injured on Sunday, authorities said. Two of the Spaniards were described as having "light" injuries, while the diagnosis for the other two runners had not yet been released.

On Saturday, a 19-year-old Spaniard was left in a "very serious" condition after runners fell and piled up at the entrance to the bullring, where the run ends. Several people were trampled.

On Friday, three men were gored, including an American who had his spleen removed.

The San Fermin bull run came under state regulation in 1867 and there have been 14 deaths there over the past century. The last person to die was a 27-year-old from Madrid gored in the neck by a bull in 2009.

Runners dress all in white with red neckerchiefs and many spectators stay up drinking all night in bars beforehand. After the run, bulls are usually killed by bullfighters in the ring.?

19th-Century Baseball Entertains In Easton

EASTON, Conn. ? Children and adults gathered at Veterans Park in Easton on Saturday got a glimpse of how baseball was played back in the 1860s as the Nutmeg Base Ball Club took on Billy Barnie?s Blue Boys in two exhibition games.

The teams ? named after historic teams that played in Hartford ??are part of the Coltsville Vintage Base Ball League, which is headed by the Friends of Vintage Base Ball, a Hartford-based re-enactment group.?

Each team in the league uses period-appropriate uniforms, equipment, customs and rules.?

?It?s definitely more entertaining? than playing modern-day baseball, said Blue Boy team member Mark Wigglesworth, known on the field as Scrappy.

Saturday?s first game followed 1865 rules, while the second was based on 1861 rules. Compared with modern rules, some of the differences are small. For example, the pitcher stood closer to the batter and threw the ball underhand.

Other changes are more noticeable. Back then, players used their bare hands to catch balls ? not gloves. Also, umpires did not award walks. Instead, batters took as many pitches as necessary until they hit a ball in play or struck out.

The event raised funds for the Easton Historical Society and was co-sponsored by the Easton Parks and Recreation Department.
