New Ranch Homes | Garden Street | Atlanta Real Estate Forum

Garden StreetAs the fastest growing city in Cherokee County, Woodstock has boomed since the start of the recession. According to the Downtown Development Authority, downtown Woodstock alone has 430 businesses and 2,133 employees. With this amount of people, the city is becoming a popular relocation area for professionals, families and active adults. To meet the needs of this growing city, Windsong Properties is building its newest community, Garden Street. Located off of Main Street, the community offers the builder?s award-winning ranch homes within a successful and walkable area of the city.

?Throughout the recession, the micro-economy of Woodstock has grown as the nation?s economy remained looking bleak,? stated Carrie Roeger, marketing manager of Windsong Properties. ?For this reason, we believed that it was the right time to invest in downtown Woodstock.?

Garden Street officially opened on Monday, March 12, 2012 with a ribbon cutting ceremony. 33 guests attended, including Mayor Donnie Henriques, several city council members and Billy Peppers from the Downtown Development Authority.

This new ranch home community is just another proof that this metro Atlanta area is booming. Additionally, according to the 2011 and 2010 economic activity reports from the Georgia Department of Community Affairs, downtown Woodstock has generated 180 new jobs, rehabbed 30 buildings, hosted 237 community events with 77,866 in attendance and made six public improvements.

Garden Street will have 19 single story detached ranch homes with maintenance free yards. The community is convenient to I-575 and the numerous dining, shopping and recreational destinations near historic Woodstock Square.

?Many people in the area are ready to downsize,? continued Roeger. ?The ambience of downtown Woodstock is so wonderful, and people are drawn to it. Having an elegant ranch home within walking distance of the many shops, restaurants and activities makes this a highly sought after place to live.?

The area is projected to continue to grow. According to the city?s Office of Economic Development Services, downtown Woodstock is estimated to grow from a 5,702 population in 2010 to a 9,771 population in 2015. In addition, the amount of dwellings will grow from 2,597 in 2010 to 4,337 in 2015. Windsong Properties hopes to help contribute to these increases with its new ranch homes.

Programs Aim To Turn Science Undergrads Into K-12 Teachers

60-Second Science60-Second Science | More Science

At a higher education and science policy roundtable in New York City, University of Colorado at Boulder chancellor Philip DiStefano talked about his institution's efforts to attract science majors to teaching K-12. Steve Mirsky reports

More 60-Second Science

?Thirty percent of the teachers around the country teaching physics either don?t have a degree in physics or don?t have a minor in physics.?

Philip DiStefano, chancellor of the University of Colorado at Boulder. DiStefano joined other higher education leaders for a roundtable April 3 in New York City.

?And so one of my goals is to make sure that we?re getting more qualified science and math teachers from our science and mathematics department to go into education and teach in our K through 12 schools.

?And we have a number of grants?to ensure that not only do we have more science and math teachers going into the public schools, but we?re also reconceptualizing our undergraduate math and science courses so that they?re interesting?and so we?re taking kind of a two pronged approach by trying to recruit more of our majors in math and science, chemistry, physics, biology, to go into K through 12 education. But also to revamp the courses that we teach so that they?re?getting students interested.?

Too Much Stress with Your Life- Head to your Fitness Center - Insure ...

Thursday, April 5th, 2012 at 3:00 am ?

Many people appreciate the value of exercise, and also nearly everyone that does knows that they could and should complete more of it. But what holds us back? We?ve noticed that exercise relieves stress, and if we had a better appreciation of the reasons it does, maybe it would offer greater motivation to start an exercise regimen. And every so often all it takes to get the ball rolling for a workout agenda is to take the very first step. Then commit to 21 days of exercise, since research has shown that it takes about that many days to create a habit.

The way exercise is going to reduce anxiety will come about the following way:

1. Elevates blood flow. It was available within the Journal of the American Medical Association that folks with high levels of anxiety also had more intervals of insufficient circulation to the heart. When we will be stressed, it leads to the muscle tissues to tense and blood vessels to constrict. Over time, those high levels of anxiety interfere with blood flow, and Poor Blood Circulation may cause multiple health issues. Exercise of any type relaxes the muscles and helps better blood circulation. Aerobic exercises such as swimming, running, fast walking and cycling will be the most effective to lift the heart rate and increase blood flow. The objective is going to be to get the pulse rate to increase to about 120 beats for 15 minute periods.

2. Exercise as the reaction to ?fight or flight?. Our prehistoric ancestors employed anxiety as the way to survive. In periods of danger, anxiety caused the heart and the nervous system to race so as to prime them for either the battle or the fast escape. The rush of energy that came so as to survive was the safety valve that, at the time the predicament ended, brought on the relaxation reaction.

Stress in our life does not entail life or death situations (except naturally in those extraordinary lines of occupation), nonetheless anxiety still is part of our daily lives. However we will still hold stress. Aerobic Training is that release that allows us to release energy, followed by the relaxation period to allow our body to recover and reward ourselves for a task done well. Any exercise that enables you to blow off steam should reduce anxiety amounts and increase good health.

3. Endorphin level becomes increased. We understand all about endorphins: those feel-good neurotransmitters produced by the human brain that makes us feel good all over. These mood enhancers lessen angst and increase sleep, that many times is disrupted by depression, anxiety and, of course stress. Yoga, which can be a terrific work out routine, also puts a great emphasis on stress reduction through proper breathing as well as mind control.

As we can see, the source of a large quantity of anxiety comes from the brain, but one may inquire, ?If anxiety originates in the brain, why should exercise, and that is movement of the body lessen anxiety.? I know you already grasp the answer. Every aspect of the system and all of its functions will be intricately woven as one, and we can never examine a single aspect with no cause-and-effect correlation with all others. Stress will forever be around, but it really may be best controlled with a regular exercise routine.

Eat to Build a Better Brain | Healthy eating, fitness and losing weight

By Dr. Drew Ramsey -

Good mental health ? feeling your best, focused, energetic, and balanced ? begins with the right food choices. And the stats are in, folks. We are not making the right choices. Today, illness rates are at an all-time high, not only for obesity and diabetes, but also all major brain disorders. Two-thirds of Americans are obese and ninety-seven million have pre-diabetes; both conditions wreak havoc on the brain, increasing the risk of depression and dementia.

First, let?s agree that the mind stems from the brain. All the various neurons buzzing about create our sensations, feelings, thoughts and memories. It all starts up there. Amazing what Mother Nature has created-an electrical storm of consciousness built from food.

That?s what this blog is about: brainfood. What are the essential nutrients that should be on your plate for the best brain your genes can muster? Once you build a better brain, what should be on your plate to care for it as you age?

So why step into the Farmacy? Well, I grew up on a farm and all the molecules you need to build a better brain are there. What about the pharmacy? Hey, I?m a NYC-based psychiatrist. I have prescribed and continue to prescribe many medications, with both great successes and, admittedly, great failures. No matter what you may need from the pharmacy, every brain needs a farmacy.

Emerging science increasingly links our dietary patterns to our moods, and also to the risk of serious mental disorders like depression. Today the top source of calories for most Americans is added fats and added sugars, something you won?t find in the Farmacy. When Hippocrates stated ?Let thy food be they medicine and thy medicine be thy food,? he was onto something. Many of the molecules in food actually have the same biochemical functions as some modern medications. Consider one arrow in the quiver of the modern pharmacological mixologist, the class medications called MAO-inhibitors that treat depression and dementia: Compounds in food have these same properties. Taking powerful antioxidant supplements? Science supports that the right food choices can supercharge your body?s own internal free-radical zapping systems. Add to this the attributes of other molecules I?ll be highlighting in food: natural antibiotics, antivirals, anti-inflammatories, and compounds that fight heart disease, obesity, and diabetes. I started seeing this trend over and over again while researching The Happiness Diet. Biochemical brain-building synergies that come from real, whole and, ideally, locally-farmed food-The Farmacy.

Our food has changed so much in the last few hundred years. Not only have we reduced the variety of foods we eat, but our relationship to many brain essential nutrients has radically shifted. Industrial trans fats now linked to depression, heart disease and diabetes first entered our food supply just 100 years ago. As a population we have fallen prey to a very interesting problem; we are overfed with the wrong calories and undernourished with the very ones our brain thrives on. Deficiencies of omega-3 fats, vitamin B12, vitamin D, magnesium, and iron are quite common in America. Along with these shortages come a slew of neurotoxins from the modern chemistry lab used to color, preserve and make food today. Additionally, the most common source of long-term environmental toxins like PCB, dioxins, BPA, and pesticides, is, for most people, their food.

So, it?s time for a tune-up: a proverbial oil change of your brain lube, some new tires that grip the road a little better. The Farmacy even can give provide a little more horsepower upstairs. That?s the power of food.
