NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Drew Brees makes setting records sound so simple.

"Every guy on our team knows that just get where you are supposed to be and we'll find the open guy and continue to move the ball down the field," Brees said.

The Saints' star quarterback did just that Sunday night, completing 26 of 36 passes for 342 yards and touchdowns to three different receivers in a 31-17 victory over the Detroit Lions.

The performance gave Brees 4,031 yards this season, making him the first quarterback in NFL history to eclipse the 4,000-yard mark in a season's first 12 games.

"We were able to spread the ball around and come up with some big plays," Brees said. "I hope our hopes and aspirations are bigger than setting records."

Brees' touchdown passes went for 67 yards to Robert Meachem, 20 yards to Lance Moore and 6 yards to Darren Sproles. He also connected eight times with tight end Jimmy Graham for 89 yards as the Saints (9-3) improved to 6-0 at home while taking a two-game lead over Atlanta in the NFC South.

"He's a surgeon out there and makes me look good," Graham said of Brees. "When your quarterback has confidence in you, it raises you to a new level."

During the Saints' three touchdown drives in the first half, Brees completed 12 straight passes for 216 yards.

Matthew Stafford passed for 408 yards and one touchdown for the Lions (7-5), who have lost five of their last seven, but remain in playoff contention.

The Lions hurt themselves with 11 penalties for 107 yards, including three offensive pass interference penalties and a personal foul on tight end Brandon Pettigrew for shoving an official who was trying to get between him and Saints safety Roman Harper after the whistle.

"We beat ourselves today. Our offense continued to get derailed by penalties," Lions coach Jim Schwartz said. "We cannot afford to be selfish and put the team at risk of taking points off the board and there was way too much of that today."

The mistakes made it impossible for the Lions to keep pace with the league's No. 1 offense, and Detroit missed a chance to take a one-game lead over Chicago and Atlanta in the NFC wild-card race.

"We had a great opportunity to do what we wanted to do," Stafford said. "Obviously, we did not do it tonight. Smart football teams are still playing in January. Teams that make smart decisions don't beat themselves."

Mark Ingram scored New Orleans' first touchdown on a 14-yard run. The Saints then built a 24-7 halftime lead on the touchdowns to Meachem and Moore before Detroit showed signs of mounting a comeback.

Jason Hanson's 31-yard field goal made it 24-10. The Lions pulled within one score on Maurice Morris' 9-yard touchdown reception.

Hanson lined up for 55-yarder early in the fourth quarter that could have pulled the Lions even closer, but missed it wide left. That set up the Saints' decisive seven-play, 55-yard scoring drive on which Brees found Graham four times for 46 yards before hitting Sproles for his score.

"I like the fact that we answered in the second half when the momentum shifted," Saints coach Sean Payton said.

Although the Lions were without Ndamukong Suh because of his two-game suspension, and also without injured defensive backs Chris Houston (left knee) and Louis Delmas (left knee), Schwartz said that was no excuse for several defensive lapses, particularly in the first half.

"We played poorly on defense. We never gave ourselves a chance," Schwartz said. "We didn't get the job done in coverage. We didn't get the job done rushing the passer."

Still, Detroit got more pressure on Brees than the Saints' recent opponents, sacking him twice, including rookie Nick Fairley's first career sack. Brees had not been sacked in three previous games.

Stafford completed 31 of 44 passes, but was sacked three times and intercepted by Tracy Porter.

Nate Burleson had five catches for 93 yards, while Calvin Johnson had six catches for 69 yards. Kevin Smith had a 2-yard touchdown run in the first half.

Meachem caught three passes for 119 yards, and the Saints' defense was bolstered by the return of linebacker Jonathan Vilma, who had missed three games with left knee injury that required surgery. He had a team-leading 10 tackles.

Notes: Lions T Jeff Backus set a new franchise record with his 172nd consecutive start, surpassing Hall of Fame CB Dick LeBeau. ... Schwartz said Fairley was limited by pain in his left foot, which he'd injured during training camp, but X-rays were negative. ... Brees is the second quarterback in NFL history to pass for 4,000 or more yards in six straight seasons. Peyton Manning did it from 1999-2004. ... Graham now has 1,046 yards this season, making him the first Saints tight end to have more than 1,000 yards receiving in a season.

Obama, Clinton together again pitching efficiency

(AP) ? In a potent political pairing, President Barack Obama and former President Bill Clinton evoked a more prosperous time in America Friday as they jointly pushed a green jobs program that Obama said harkens back to the Clinton administration when "we were firing on all cylinders."

"We can be that nation again," Obama said. "We will be that nation again."

In the spare setting of a downtown Washington construction site, Obama offered a restrained assessment of the current U.S. economy even in the face of Friday's sharp drop in unemployment, from 9 percent to 8.6 percent in November.

Noting that the U.S. has seen 21 straight months of private sector job growth, Obama said, "We need to keep that growth going." And he prodded Congress once again to extend and expand a current Social Security payroll tax cut.

Recalling better economic times, Obama seemed almost nostalgic. Embarking on a re-election campaign, he drew not-so-subtle attention to the successes of the last two-term Democrat to serve in the White House.

"When Bill Clinton was president, we didn't shortchange investment. We didn't say we're going to cut back on the things that we know are going to help us grow in the future," he said. "We didn't make decisions that put the burden on the middle class or the poor. We lived within our means. We invested in our future. We asked everyone to pay their fair share.

"And you know what happened? The private sector thrived. Jobs were created. The middle class grew, its income grew. Millions rose out of poverty. We ran a surplus. We were actually on track to be able to pay off all of our debt. We were firing on all cylinders."

The unusual pairing of Obama and the popular former president was designed to draw outsize attention to a $4 billion administration energy efficiency initiative that Obama and Clinton teamed up to announce. It aims to achieve achieving fuel savings in government and private sector buildings and more employment at no increased cost to taxpayers.

Obama said the program was a cheap way to help create jobs, save money and cut down on pollution.

"It is a trifecta," he said.

The program's appeal is that the cost to renovate government and private sector buildings is paid off over time by the energy savings. What's more, the contractors who perform the work guarantee that lower energy costs will materialize.

"It is the nearest thing we've got to a free lunch in a tough economy," Clinton said.

The announcement is yet another in a string of White House initiatives designed to address the current weak economy without having to seek congressional approval.

But the program itself was overshadowed by the television-ready image of the incumbent president and the last two-term Democrat to serve in the White House appearing together. The appearance was reminiscent of, though not comparable to, Obama's and Clinton's joint appearance a year ago when Obama gave the former president the stage to endorse a tax deal between Obama and Congress.

Alluding to ads by a Republican-leaning political group that feature Clinton comments about tax increases, Obama said: "I've noticed that some folks on the other side have been quoting President Clinton about it's a bad idea to raise taxes during tough economic times.

"That's precisely why I sought to extend the payroll tax this year and next year. It doesn't mean we lock in tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans. I don't think President Clinton has been on board for that for perpetuity."

To that, Clinton looked on with nodding delight.

Clinton spoke first Friday, praising the energy program and Obama's leadership. Obama followed. But as they wrapped up and Obama began to guide Clinton and other guests away, a reporter asked what advice Clinton had for Obama.

"Oh, he gives me advice all the time," Obama said, eager to leave.

Clinton returned to the microphone, but stayed on message, extolling the green building program.

When a reporter shouted whether a president can win re-election under the current economy, Clinton appeared to hear it and looked ready to respond, but Obama corralled him and ushered him away.

The program outlined Friday is designed to upgrade buildings over the next two years, with a goal of improving energy performance by 20 percent by 2020. The federal government will commit $2 billion to the effort and a coalition of corporations, labor unions, universities and local governments will undertake the other half.

Authority for the program has been in place since the Clinton administration but has been little used. Obama's announcement is yet another in a string of White House initiatives designed to address the current weak economy without having to seek congressional approval.

Gene Sperling, director of the White House National Economic Council, said private economic analyses indicate that the $4 billion plan could generate about 50,000 jobs over two years.

The program builds on an initiative that Obama launched in February and that Clinton led through his Clinton Foundation to get the private sector to invest in greater energy efficiency.

Joining Obama and Clinton was Thomas Donohue, the president and CEO of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, a long-time proponent of the Energy Saving Performance Contracts.

"We have been pushing the ESPC program for more than a decade because this holds tremendous potential," Donohue said in a statement. "Despite the benefits of ESPCs, the program has been grossly underutilized."

Argentina wins Davis Cup doubles vs Spain (AP)

SEVILLE, Spain ? Argentina won the doubles against Spain to trail 2-1 Saturday and stay in contention at the Davis Cup final.

David Nalbandian and Eduardo Schwank, partnering for the first time, eased to a 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Spanish pair Fernando Verdasco and Feliciano Lopez on the clay at Olympic Stadium.

The South Americans broke five times and repelled each of the three they faced against their Spanish counterparts to extend the match into Sunday. The visitors need to sweep Sunday's reverse singles to become the first team in 72 years to rally from a 2-0 deficit.

"We played a great game. We're in very good shape, and the series is still alive," Nalbandian said. "Our hope is intact."

Rafael Nadal, unbeaten on clay in 16 Davis Cup matches, opens for four-time champion Spain against Juan Martin del Potro.

The 11th-ranked Del Potro needs to recover quickly from his exhausting, nearly five-hour loss to David Ferrer on Friday.

"Rafa will be going out to win, so Juan Martin has to play his best tennis to win," said Nalbandian, who added he was ready to replace Juan Monaco should the final stretch to a fifth match.

Lopez and Verdasco again failed to follow up an impressive sweep of the opening singles by Nadal and David Ferrer. They also lost in the semifinals against France in which they won only three games. Their cup win-loss record together stands at 7-6.

"Obviously, today we didn't play well," Spain captain Albert Costa said.

The Argentine section of fans was boisterous throughout, with Nalbandian volleying home the winner to break Lopez's serve in the fifth game as the visitors served out the set.

Nalbandian played for the first time since October because of various injuries. He and Schwank took a 4-0 lead in the second to take command of the match.

In the third set, after the Spanish pair managed to get the crowd fired up with a break chance in the sixth game, Argentina saved two break opportunities before Schwank ended the suspense with a volley at the net to hold serve.

Argentina has never won in three previous final appearances, including 2008 when it lost to Spain in Mar del Plata.

Family funeral held for 5 young NC slaying victims (AP)

PLEASANT GARDEN, N.C. ? Hundreds of friends, teenagers and teachers filled a North Carolina church Friday to join a family as it buried five children killed in what investigators have described as a family massacre.

Mourners packed into Pleasant Garden Baptist Church to attend the collective funeral for the five children, ages 8 to 17, who authorities say were gunned down in a shooting rampage by Mary Ann Holder, 36. Authorities say Holder apparently shot one of her sons and three other children while they slept at her Pleasant Garden home, shot and wounded her married former lover, then killed her younger son. Holder then killed herself.

Four of the children survived for days with what Sheriff BJ Barnes said were bullet wounds to the head. Holder left two notes apologizing for the pain she'd caused, Barnes said.

So many people attended the funeral in Guilford County that an overflow crowd gathered in the gym of the Family Life Center to watch a live video feed.

Four ministers led the service in the pulpit, under which lay the closed caskets of the five children. Three of the ministers eulogized the child or children they knew best.

Authorities say Holder killed her two sons: Robert Dylan Smith, 17, and Zachary Smith, 14. Barnes said she also killed the niece and nephew she took into her home when her sister died: Richard Brian Suttles, 17, and Hannaleigh Suttles, 8. She also mortally wounded Makayla Leigh Woods, Robert's 15-year-old girlfriend.

"It takes your breath away," friend Brooke Bex said. "I never thought I'd see my friends in a casket at that age."

Another friend, Adam Couch. was a pallbearer for Dylan Smith. He said he choked up when the family asked him to be part of the memorial.

"I never would have thought in a million years I'd be carrying my best friend to his grave, but I'm honored to do it," Couch said.

Holder's mother, Frances, said the family was praying that at least one of the children would survive to describe what happened. Frances Holder said she can't believe her daughter was responsible for the mass killings because she cared deeply for her children.

"People are calling my daughter a deadbeat mother, she was a no-good mother," Frances Holder said Thursday outside the church where mourners visited with the family. "She was very close to her children. I don't know what happened. I have no answers. I'm waiting for answers, just like everyone else."

Mary Ann Holder had been having an affair with Randall Lamb, 40, for more than three years, and its aftermath created months of bitter accusations involving Holder, Lamb and Lamb's wife, including allegations of stalking and harassment.

Jennifer Lamb had prepared but not yet filed a potentially costly lawsuit against Holder accusing her of alienating the affections of her husband, investigators said.

Mary Ann Holder met Randall Lamb the night before the shooting rampage to give him a $10,000 check in an apparent settlement aimed at staving off the threatened lawsuit, criminal investigators said in a search warrant. Holder then asked to meet him again the next morning in a community college parking lot.

That meeting ended with Holder firing several shots at Randall Lamb and wounding him in the shoulder. He recovered in a hospital and has returned home.
