Marie Osmond suffers vocal scare in Las Vegas (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Singer Marie Osmond was rushed to a hospital in Las Vegas with concerns about her voice following a show with her brother Donny, but was later diagnosed with bronchitis, her spokesman said on Thursday.

Marie Osmond finished her portion of the performance at the Flamingo Las Vegas hotel on Wednesday night before going to the hospital for as much as two hours for tests, the singer's representative said.

Osmond is expected to return to the stage on Thursday night, and no shows have been canceled. The 52 year-old singer is currently headlining a variety performance live show alongside her brother Donny at the Flamingo.

The Osmond Brothers singing group rose to fame in the 1970s and were soon joined onstage by sister Marie, who went on to host a TV variety show with brother Donny, called "Donny & Marie." More recently, Marie Osmond appeared on the popular TV show "Dancing With the Stars."

Motorola shipped 4.8 million smartphones, just 100,000 Xoom tablets in Q3

Motorola

Motorola Mobility just announced its third-quarter 2011 earnings, dropping word that it shipped 4.8 million smartphones for the three months ending Sept. 30. It also said it shipped 100,000 Xoom Honeycomb tablets. By comparison, it shipped 3.8 million smartphones in Q3 2010, The Xoom wasn't available until 2011, but consider that Motorola said it shipped 440,000 of them in the second quarter. That's quite the drop.

Moto also give an update regarding its merger with Google, but didn't do much more than just repeat that shareholders will vote on the deal Nov. 17, and that it's all contingent on passing legal muster in the U.S., Europe, Canada, China, Israel, Russia, Taiwan and Turkey, and that the whole deal could be final by the end of 2011, or in early 2012. Motorola's attributing $18 million in expenses to the merger.

No conference call this quarter. Too bad. They're usually pretty juicy. Hit the link below for all the financial nitty gritty.

Linux Foundation, Canonical and Red Hat Weigh In On Secure Boot

linux-foundationThere's been some hubbub lately about Secure Boot, a hardware-verified, malware-free operating system bootstrap process that aims to improve the overall security of computers. Part of the UEFI specification, Secure Boot can forbid the loading and execution of unsigned operating systems. Microsoft is requiring that Secure Boot be activated and enforced for any OEM systems that want to use the "Designed for Windows 8" logo. The nature of the technology has some worrying that Microsoft is making a play to lock out Free Software operating systems from OEM computers. After some initial hysteria on Slashdot (where else?), calmer minds have prevailed, and have reviewed the UEFI Secure Boot specification in some detail. It's a pretty marked change from the old BIOS with which many of us are familiar: the use of public key cryptography makes the whole thing considerably more complex. But there's nothing about Secure Boot, prima facie, that specifically locks out Free Software operating systems.
